    Queen includer

OK did that and it was easier than expected. Full Langstroth jumbos are pretty heavy but this one isn't (yet). Thanks!

    Queen includer

Just thinking aloud about the pain of removing the QX from above the floor a day or so after housing a swarm to prevent the queen absconding. It's a two-person job, disturbs the bees at a sensitive time for them and inevitably some will get squished. So instead why not just fix a piece of QX...

    Oxalic Acid.

Is "not approved" the same as illegal? Either way you're supposed to get a Home Office licence to possess oxalic acid crystals or >10% solution.

    Stored frames

I use Certan which helps control the larvae but I still get loads of adult moths and some larvae around my stored kit - probably because it's in the dark. I was wondering about leaving a low-wattage LED lamp or LED tape on 24/7 as apparently they don't like light. Anyone done this? What...

    treat and feed

Last year because of lack of time we had Apiguard in an eke, under a coverboard then a feeder in a super. They filled the eke with syrup-filled brace comb (avoiding the Apiguard tray). We left the eke on over winter but it was a real pain sorting the mess out in spring. When our stock of...

    Reuniting after failed mating

Thanks - all the indications are they are queen-right but it's just seems it's getting late in the year for their numbers to recover for winter. Hence the suggestion of uniting, but that would complicate autumn feeding and varroa-treatment ... ah well.

    Reuniting after failed mating

Just how late in the year can you leave them broodless? One of our colonies swarmed while we were on holiday about 5 weeks ago. Bees seem normal, cells are polished and they didn't raise a new queen from a test frame. But still no brood or eggs. Our local bee inspector visited last week for a...

Opinions - best vehicle for Beeks?

Surely the obvious vehicle for a beekeeper is a Hummer. (I'll get me beesuit ...)

    crocus out already

Colchicums (aka autumn crocus, meadow saffron) do look very like regular crocuses but are not related. One difference is that they tend to flower before the leaves emerge, whereas true crocuses usually come into leaf first then flower.

    Escape / clearer board

Yes - you've put some wet supers back for the bees to clean. So in a day or so you have to go back, take the supers off, add a clearer board, put the supers back. Much easier to slide a lever ... you wouldn't even need to suit-up. And yes I know some people just overwinter wet supers or would...

    Escape / clearer board

Has anyone ever come up with an escape board that you could control from the outside? It just occurred to me how useful that would be; you could just flick a lever on the outside to "set" the escapes and you wouldn't have to disturb the stack at all. All I could find was this but it's not...

    "Beekeepinglinks" website

We've just started getting lots of swarm calls from strangers, which is odd as we haven't been swarm coordinators for a couple of years and are no longer listed with BBKA or mentioned on our local club's site. However a quick Google found some of our details mixed up with someone else on...

Bumble Bees - waht advice are you giving?

I guess they are like honeybees - some tree bumble colonies are more defensive than others. We have several rescued bombus hypnorum colonies in bird boxes in the garden and have never been stung. One piece of advice you can give people is to clean out bird boxes by the autumn. Tree bumbles will...

is it too late to treat?

I put the first Apiguard packs in a week ago and it had all gone yesterday - maybe it's too warm at the moment. I'm not sure when to put the second packs in - two weeks after the first as the instructions say, or now so treatment is continuous.
