    Small Hive Beetle coming next?

Received the latest newsletter from the local BKA, and there's comprehensive information on identifying, and dealing with, Small Hive Beetle. So I assume they think it will arrive in France before long...

    Swarmed...

Spent this morning collecting a swarm from one of my hives...bees flew out and landed conveniently close, in a small amelanchier shrub. They're now in a nuc box and I hope to hive them this evening...

For those who insulate their hives, at what temperature low do you put on insulation - e.g, before the first frost, below 10 degrees etc etc?

    Wax Moth 1:Bin liners 0

Found a pool of honey today beneath a bag of stored brood frames (from my ex-colony in December)... :cuss: When I opened the bag (black bin liner) it was full of wax moth caterpillars and 4 or 5 wax moths  what a mess! I've salvaged 3 frames and given them to one hive in a spare BB below...

    Tree I.D please

Anybody know what tree this is from? The bees love it. It has red berries on in Autumn, and is about 3m tall with a 15 cm diameter trunk.

    My first swarm!

Did not expect to get a swarm - but was a real beeginners' swarm, about shoulder height in a blackthorn bush! Shook it into a nuc box and hived it late yesterday evening - still there this morning. Do you like the heart-shape of the swarm? :biggrinjester:

    Beekeeping by the moon?

There's an article in my gardening magazine on gardening by the moon, and it has a reference to beekeeperes, translating as: "For beekeepers, it's time to work the bees under the fire constellations (these favour fruits and seeds), to favour the production of honey". Anybody beekeep according...

Brood Frame Trap - Good Idea?

Had a look with the Search facility but can't find anything, so, apologies if this has been discussed before... Received T'orne's catalogue today and am wondering about the viability/practicality of the Brood Frame Trap. I understand the method of Varroa control, but it seems a waste of brood...

Disabling speed camera alerts on satnavs

Evidently there's a law been passed here, that to use the speed camera warning system on a satnav is now illegal, and must now be disabled. This is backed up by an e-mail I received from my satnav manufacturer. Is that also the case in the UK? I thought it was only illegal in Switzerland up to now.

    Queen as swarm attractant

If I keep my queen to attract a swarm next year, do I just keep her in a ziplock bag in the freezer, or is something stronger needed (e.g., matchbox etc)? And when/where do I place her once spring arrives?

Help please - All my bees have gone

This is incredibly hard for me. Here goes. Yesterday I had a quick look under the roof to check the fondant, having listened at the hive and could not hear anything, so alarm bells were starting to ring. The fondant was solid, and stuck fast to the crownboard. I realised that this was because...
