I've always assumed 1:1 feed was 1 kg of sugar and 1 kg of water (in other words 1 litre of water.) Reading a book yesterday I happened to notice the writer referred 1:1 as 500ml water vs 1kg of sugar presumably suggesting it's measured by volume.
