    Timing of winter oxalic treatment

Interested in people's view on timing of winter treatment. I treated using sublimated oxalic acid over a 3 week period in the autumn and I was planning to do a winter treatment as well. Two questions: 1) Is a winter treatment really necessary given that I treated in September? 2) If one does...

Is it just me, or does this seem like a pointless product? Is mite drop not a easier metric for infestation? https://youtu.be/QxYE2LLTYAo

Winter oxalic necessary if bees treated with oxalic in autumn?

I treated my bees this autumn with three doses of sublimated oxalic acid, at 7 day intervals. My question is, is it really necessary to treat them again this winter, just 90 days later? Would be interested to hear what others do.

    Oxalic sublimation for Autumn Treatment

Is there a consensus on the use of sublimated oxalic as an autumn treatment? I've seen some posts suggesting 3 treatment 5 days apart. Should the amount of sublimated oxalic be the same as during a 1x winter treatment?

    Oxalic acid sublimation vs trickling

I wasn't very active on the forum for a year or two and on my return it seems that the standard method of applying OA in the U.K. Has gone from trickling to sublimation. What changed? Has there been new research or guidelines? Or is it more a change in fashion?

Moving hives about half a mile

I have to move 4 hives about half a mile prior to the end of December. I've heard that in the winter one can move hives this distance if you temporarily obstruct the entrances with sticks and leaves once they've arrived at the new location. Has anyone had experience doing this? The hives are...

    Wasps

Any clever ideas on how to deal with a hive that is bring attacked by large numbers of wasps day after day? It's my gentlest colony and unfortunately they seem to be gentle with the invaders. I'm feeding at the moment and have been thinking about removing the syrup and then restarting once...

    Alternatives to Buckfast bees

I've been beekeeping for about 6 years and thought I'd try an alternative strain to Buckfasts. My main problem has been aggressiveness of the second generation queens. Any suggestions on a calm strain that is bred in the UK and suited to Southern British weather? On a recent visit to Poland, I...

    Dealing with aggressive colony

I have 5 hives in fairly close proximity to each other (about 3 feet apart). One colony has been extremely aggressive all season and it's got to the point where it's really tough to inspect. I actually want to reduce the number of colonies, but rather than destroy all the bees in the nasty hive...

    Moving bees in winter

I had read that moving bees in winter is risky because the winter cluster can be affected. I need to move my bees about 4 miles. Has anyone had problems moving hives at this time of year? One reason I'm keen to move them now is that I could do so during the day as they arent flying.

Very thick honey - couldn't extract

I just extracted the honey from my 4 hives. The frames on 3 of the hives extracted fine. However the 4th hive was different. I noticed it first when trying to remove the cappings with a heat gun - they didn't melt instantly like the others. I then found that the honey was too viscous to extract...

How best to unite nucleus with aggressive colony

I have several aggressive, swarmy colonies which I have decided to requeen. All have had artificial swarms in recent weeks. I've put my newly purchased queens in nucs where they are laying nicely. My problem is that the aggressive colonies may have virgin queens, or mated queens that aren't...

    Weak colony - requeen?

Did my first inspection of the season yesterday. 4 Hives: 3 very strong, one weak. The weak hive had lots of dead bees on the floor, a reduced number of bees in the hive, I noticed varoa on the bodies of 2 bees - something I've not seen before. 2 year-old queen present and laying, but pattern...

    Robbing within the apiary

I have four colonies and have been feeding all 4 for the last 3 weeks. I have a situation where one colony is robbing another one aggressively. I've tried putting obstacles in front of the hives, spraying with water, etc., but they are relentless. Any advice on how to stop this? I thought...

    Choosing an extractor

I'm looking to buy a motorised extractor and have been looking at Abelo/Lyson, Thornes, and Giordan. I have 4-6 hives and and leaning towards a radial extractor. I'd be very interested to hear of people's experiences - positive and negative...
