What did you do in the Apiary today?

Quick check today revealed the angry hive i thought were going to swarm have decided to take down all queen cells. Went through twice and could find none. My split colonies appear to be doing well, Once is full of sealed brood and really small larvae. Hopefully when the draw out the new...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Took off two supers and have spun out 35 pounds of honey so far. Exceeded last year's total already so feeling pleased. Weather was far too bad to open up the hives. Got absolutely soaked retrieving the supers at lunchtime. Started scouting for a new site to house the bees as the rape nearby...

Before I do something stupid again...

I think i'll try the WSII method. That is if the weather improves, nothing but rain :(

Before I do something stupid again...

Thanks for the replies, i appreciate it. From what i've read the Snelgrove II method seems to fit the bill so will attempt to get back to the hives and carry it out.

Before I do something stupid again...

After last weeks mistake with splitting a hive I wanted to ask for advice before i get myself into a pickle. One full colony of bees, i cannot see a queen nor eggs. I can see larvae and sealed brood, lots an lots of sealed brood. Today i found some queen cells that were charged with really...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I'd assumed they were swarming. Had i been able to find the queen i'd have followed the guides i have on what to do. I've been back over, moved over an open and changed QC, move hive back. Other colony has a charged QC. No sign of eggs but even with a torch I cannot see into the cells. I think...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I will do that, decided to "work" from home today so will get over and make alterations shortly. The reason i asked about undoing all the changes i made was that i was thinking if they were superseding then perhaps i should have just left them alone. I hope it don't come across that i was...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

That's what I'll do, I'll put a qc back tomorrow. I don't think this hobby is for me, I cannot see Queens or eggs Might order a bigger torch and magnifying glass! So is it worth me just undoing everything I did and put it all back together, all qcs?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

No doubt made the wrong choice but had to do something there and then. Did think that they might be supercedure cells. But they were all on the outside of the frames, none on the faces of frames and there were a lot. One or two I'm thinking supercedure, about 10 I'm thinking swarm. Smaller hive...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bad day today, feeling a little worn out. Went through hive 1 and could see no Queen or eggs. Not surprising as I usually struggle, lots of larvae though so no problem. Then found a queen cell unsealed, followed by two sealed, then a couple more. I'd remembered how to do an artificial swarm...

    OSR Spraying

Got a text this morning to say they are spraying this afternoon. Quick dash out of bed and to the site where I've blocked them in. Lots of bees returning and clustering on the front but not much can be done I guess. Was toying whether to shut them in or not but I'd be like tanker John and...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yeah it's been a bit windy and i guessed that brought the temp down too low. I think this last week was the best we're going to see in a while. The forecast looks pretty depressing :(

What did you do in the Apiary today?

At last they are drawing out the super foundation and collecting honey! Two weeks next to acres upon acres of Rape and nothing. Was beginning to think the foundation was too old but on yesterdays inspection they've almost drawn in it all out. Still no queen cells so i don't think they'll swarm...

    OSR Spraying

Got a call from the farmer this morning as he is going to spray but he said it's only fungicide so no harm will come to the bees. When he does a pesticide spary in 4 weeks time i'll lock them in for while.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just managed an inspection in between rainshowers. Not the best day for an inspection but needs must. Although being in a field of OSR the supers were empty although lots of food in the body. No Queen seen out brood and larvae. It was too windy to messing about. No Queen cells seen which is...

    OSR Spraying

Thanks for the replies. He's going to call me before he starts so i assume the night before and I think he's doing it himself. I'll try and find out what he's spraying for. Is there anything that should set alarm bells ringing i should watch out for? It's a great site and hoping to use it...

    OSR Spraying

I've managed to find a spot in the middle of a huge OSR field and have asked the farmer to let me know before he sprays the crop. As this is my first year with my colonies at this location i'm a bit unsure what to do when he sprays. I was under the impression that i could block up the entrances...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

First inspection today so pleased to find both colonies have brood and laying Queens. Not much in the way of stores so a quick top up of syrup. Have managed to locate a space in the middle of 3 huge rape seed fields so sill be moving them tomorrow.

    Double queen help

Just went ahead with what i thought was correct. 2 frames of brood from a queen right colony and a stack of nurse bees. A feeder full of food and the queen in a cage in the middle. Over time, can i add another frame of bees in a week or so to make sure i added enough workers?

    Double queen help

Thanks for the reply. Can i mix frames of brood/nurse bees from two hives or should i just take from one? I'm assuming that i need two frames of brood + 3 shake frames of nurse bees + Feeder with syrup. Grass in entrance of nuc.
