Talks for local BKA via Zoom

Hello, Given the ongoing uncertain circumstances we're looking to schedule talks for our local association via zoom this winter. If you offer talks and would be interested in this, or can recommend a speaker, please get in touch with me via [email protected]. Thanks! Elly

    Eleventh hour

Months ago I looked at and sent a proposal for removing bees from an old farmhouse wall on behalf of a community group. They (the group managing the site) then lost their lease. Since then I've been back in a professional capacity (reptile translocation). Today the council pest controller came...

    Late winter mice

I've never had a problem with mice before and so did not fit mouse guards (urban apiary, lots of cats about). More fool me, as I recently put in inspection trays to get more of an idea how the bees were doing, and think that I have one in one of my hives. Is it too late to fit mouse guards now...

When is a play cup a queen cell?

Does a play cup with an egg in count as a queen cell (and so proceed to AS), or does it need to be charged with royal jelly to be rated as such? I've been assuming the latter but wanted to check. Thanks.

Bees for sale in Oxford, April 2014

Two established colonies of bees for sale: 2013 overwintered queen (marked) on national frames, brood and a half. Nice temperament. £100. 2013 collected swarm (August), big dark queen (unmarked). Was out of kit at the time so they were hived in two national supers and declined to move in to a...

    Swarm in Oxford

A friend of mine has a swarm in her garden that she would like collected. She has called the swarm officer but no reply yet. If you are in the area and would like this swarm then please message me for details. It is in the OX4 area and is almost definitely from an overwintered feral colony that...

    Bees for sale, Oxford

Two colonies of bees for sale. 2012 mongrel queens, brood in all stages on 4+ frames. Treated with apiguard last autumn. May also have one further colony available but have yet to inspect to confirm all is well (will hopefully do later today). £120 each for bees + frames (deep/brood national)...

    BBKA Winter Survey 12-13

 does anybody really make splits or increases from colonies between these dates?

    Bees for sale in France?

Friend of a friend looking to buy some bees in France (roundabout way of finding out, I know!) so I said I'd ask - does anybody have a bee selling contact? They live in Morbihan (Bubry/Guiscriff). Thanks :)

    Another oxalic acid question

It says on the bottle "never apply with honey supers on" (or similar wording, can't remember exactly). What if you're overwintering on brood and a half, or have a super of stores under the brood box - does it mean you'd have to discard the comb from these frames before using them as a honey...

What are you reading this winter?

Seeing as winter is nearly upon us and there have been lots of recommendations to read more, I thought it'd be good to have a book reviews thread. Was thinking primarily bee-related books but could be anything. At the moment I'm half way through Bill Turnbull's Bad Beekeepers' Club - will post...

    Grotty varroa board - disease?

I went down and hefted all our hives today, and had a look at the varroa boards. We put in apiguard a week ago. Most of the boards were pretty clear (see pic 1) but one hive had lots of grot and what looked like a couple of dead wax moth larvae on the board. I have emailed them to the local...

    Temperatures for apiguard?

This is probably a silly question, but... Apiguard says the temperature has to be over 15C when it is administered, but if it's right inside the hive on top of the brood frames won't the temperature be considerably higher than this anyway?

    Happy

Our four over wintered hives went to seven -- 2 from an AS, 1 nuc, 1 captured swarm and three original hives. Of the other two original hives one swarmed and we gave it to a friend, and one swarmed but we lost it (despite retrieving it first from a roof and then from a garden :(). As of today...

    Combining a swarm with a Q- colony?

We've just picked up a good sized swarm, definitely one of our own. One of our other hives is Q- with drone laying workers. If we shake them off this afternoon, could we unite the swarm with them later this evening? I was thinking newspaper on top, then a new super with frames for the swarm on...
