Just back from inspecting our hives and one , which last week we found the Queen ABOVE the excluder, put her back in the brood box, and added another super as it was a brood and 1/2. Guess what? This week eggs in all boxes. Any ideas on what to do? The excluder is in good condition. Thank you...

    Bees at entrance

Good morning, Can anybody explain why one of our hives have a larger number of bees, literally, hanging out of the entrance. The others do have some but mostly remain inside, or at the entrance. They have been doing this for some days now. When we inspected, yesterday, there was nothing unusual...

Can anybody tell me what advantages or disadvantages there are with a) Adding many supers or b) Removing each one as it is filled and simply placing a new super in its place?

    After extraction.......what?

Just finished extracting honey from 2 supers. Just put empty super back on hive, above crown board and they have gone mad. Trying to get in the escapes, all around the outside, lots and lots of activity. Is this normal?

    NOT Runny hunny

Hello one and all, This years honey is not runny, not that it matters I know, but I just wondered if it is OK to gently heat the jar, with honey content, in order to make it clearer and runny again? Your thoughts are welcomed.

    Agony Ivy what to do?

Our Bees are going mad, the ivy is in full blossom and everywhere in our village. They come back with their saddlebags full to overflowing and have been like this for over a week now, even in the rain. Our problem is, we believe they are running out of storage space and possibly nowhere for the...

    Keeping the Bees warm

Just a thought, would it be a good idea to make an outer shell of polystyrene wrapped and sealed in a plastic sheet to fit around the outside of the hive for winter warmth? Leaving appropriate openings of course.

Happy to be inspected but annoyed being put away

We did our weekly inspection an hour ago and on one of the hives, same as last week, we opened it up and they were nice as pie, frames out, inspection all was fine, then, as soon as we start to put everything back, they get annoyed. Any ides why? We are very gentle with them at all times.bee-smillie

    Yet more Queen cells!!!

Oh dear, whatever can the matter bee? One of our colonies swarmed a few weeks back, we did try to recover them which worked, after a fashion. However, in the meantime we had a few Queen cells left in the hive so we knocked all but two back. Leaving only one open, with larvae and one capped...

    Bees here, there and everywhere

Early this morning, about 7:00am, the bees from both hives were already out. Believe it or not it was sunny and, relatively, warm (16 degrees). A little later, at 10:00am, I looked out and was astounded to see one of the hives were out in force, they were everywhere. Not flying together but...

Hmm, why were they doing this?

Returning home from Essex to Norfolk yesterday afternoon, we were keen to check on our two hives and Bees. Apart from the grass having grown 2 feet in four days, we noticed that one of the hives had the bees busily buzzing about and looking fine, whilst we noticed that in the other, there were...

    How long should we feed?

FERA report recently informed Beekeepers to keep an eye on their hives and make sure colonies are kept fed. We duly did this and they are taking it faster than an Australian drinks lager! We are continuing to feed but just would like to know for how long? :driving:

:nature-smiley-016:Good afternoon. Surprise surprise, there IS a sun in the sky, and it has been a wonderful day here in North West Norfolk. Therefore I decided to mow the lawns. As our bees are in the front garden on the lawn I use an electric mower with a very quiet motor, in order not to...

    Novice seeking advice please.

Hello, I want to put a super onto my hive. I have read and been told that you should fill it with 11 or 12 frames. I am using plastic spacers, which give me the correct 5mm spacing yet I can fit 14 frames with a little room for movement. AM I doing something wrong? Sorry to ask such a simple...

Woke up this morning....saw some dead beeshat happens if the rain is coming from that direction.

Weather has turned nasty, again, here in Norfolk, and this morning I saw about 20 dead bees beneath their hive. Is it just a case that they have been having a clear out or the weather turning colder (12 degrees) has taken its toll on them? The front of the hive is wet from the rain, but that...
