    new smoker recommendations

I am starting again with new equipment so need to buy a new smoker. I was fairly happy with my Thorne Etna type, now in the care of my brother who is taking over all my current gear and hives. So is there anything better out there? Any particularly good quality suppliers? Maisemore seem to...

    Q. Easy way of moving a BB from 12x14 to standard deep?

I'm on 14x12 as I hated sorting through twenty plus frames. My bees are filling the frames edge to edge with brood so they do need the space and they wintered well on them Many beeks I know are using 14x12 or commercial hives- working through 11 frames make inspection much easier.

    Manley frames

I've have a super on a 14x12 in a rape field. The brood body is bursting with bees and they have not touched the super. Last night I removed the QE and when I looked in this morning they had already started to draw out three super frames (Manley). Quite ridiculous. :ack2:

Conumdrum- queen and capped QCs present

Just checked my hives on the rape. They were inspected same time last week and were in a good state, eggs, larvae and room to expand. Found the queen, couple of frames in the brood box yet to be drawn out so,I closed up and left them alone. Obviously a mistake- as this evening there were...

    Todays Flights Bee Style

What time of day was the shot taken? I seem to get an awful lot of bees out around lunchtime when the weather is good. I assume it is young bees orienting, they hang out in a cloud in front and circle around the garden, I love sitting up by the hive just watching. They haven't sent me on my...

    What Flower

Do you have any rape nearby? I don't have much near home, just some along a stream , must have been stray seed. I see the odd bee coming back with a yellow dot.

    Rauchboy smokers

Has anyone tried one of these? http://www.rauchboy.de.vu/ Not much more expensive than the empire from Thorne and delivery is free. Which size would you go for? I don't have thirty hives... but then I take that long poking through my four...

    Starting again with Langstroths

My main reason for changing over is that I will be starting again from scratch in a new country. I will not take any of my current equipment over- I don't want to bring disease over with me that may be harmful. Also shipping of made up hives will be extortionate so a few flat-packed will be...

    Starting again with Langstroths

What's the best way to contact Murray? I've tried phoning but had no luck so far. Can anyone pass me an email address via the PM or dos he have any kind of website? I can't find it online. I've been throughtthe Swienty site and the hives do seem excellent value and the "Tagggart" nuc is a...

    Starting again with Langstroths

I'm heading to Hong Kong so there is not a lot of info: What do you make of these hives? http://jmsc.hku.hk/hkstories/content/view/746/8786/ I'll visit this bee farm too: http://www.gohk.gov.hk/eng/tours/north.html That is about as much information on beekeeping in Hong Kong as I can find!

    Starting again with Langstroths

How much does a poly Lang run to? I am not looking to run a huge number of hives but at the minute, I can see ten hives being run easily- and the temptation to expand is always there. But for now, three or four Langstroths to get started, flat packed and put into the hold in a cardboard box...

    Starting again with Langstroths

I am about to move and so will be abandoning my bees (well, leaving them in the care of my brother). I am also in line to visit the US soon so I am considering the logistics of buying some equipment there and moving over to Langstroths. What size hive bodies are sensible? There is a dazzling...

    Bees stinging bees

So, I am right in my belief that a bee can sting another bee without losing is sting? When I had robbing at a nuc last year there was a mighty pile of bees at the hive entrance, all of them intact. It would make sense for the guard bees to be able to guard the nest without dying considering...

    Bees stinging bees

Does a bee necessarily die when it stings another bee (or wasp)? I'm thinking in terms of robbing bees getting attacked by the guard bees. Obviously, if they sting us, the sting gets pulled out because of the barb anchoring in our skin and the bee dies. Does this happen when another bee gets...

    Polystyrene National Hives/nucs

One thing I didn't mention was the castellations which I don't like. I have found the j-style hive tool is much better for working these hives as the castellations mean that you cannot pry the frames apart, they need to be lifted apart. I haven't tried cutting the castellations away but I am...

    Polystyrene National Hives/nucs

I have three of the poly nucs from Park beekeeping. I over wintered the three of them on 14x12 National frames. They are a very good job, the integral feeder is a real plus. I have put a mesh floor on with some simple tinkering, just cut a hole in the slide out floor with a Stanley knife and...
