    Mentoring

How long do mentors mentor individuals for, roughly? Weeks? Months? Years? I know it depends on the individual, everybody learns at a different rate, but I'd be interested to hear what some of the more experienced mentors have to say.

    Asulam for bracken control

The guy who owns the woods where I keep my bees is going to spray within 50ft of my bees with asulam, to kill the bracken. From what I've googled it is either mildly toxic or not toxic to bees. Should I just find out when he is spraying and block them in as a precaution? All day or just a few...

How soon will a swarm swarm.

I caught a swarm in a bait box on 9th May and I moved them into a hive, I checked them on 19th May, there were a few play cups which i thought were empty. Fed them syrup to help them draw out combs. Checked today 26th May, 18 sealed queen cells!

    Hive Mover

Does anybody have any bright ideas for a hive mover, I need to get across two fields with no vehicle access. I've seen Dave Cushmans photos of his converted wheel barrow, and I have a suitable doner vehicle.

Bees in the wood do no good?

I'm looking to relocate 5 hives at the edge of a smallish wooded area looking out onto fields etc. but they will be under trees. Other than the occasional falling branch, can any more experienced berks think of reasons why i shouldn't proceed with this plan. They can face east or west, but I...

    Swarm arrived at bait box

I've just had my first swarm arrive at a bait box on top of my garage. It is a box I knocked up to national brood box dimensions with three frames of old comb in it. I plan to move them to my apiary site a few miles away and have a spare hive ready, but I'm in no rush, they could stay there...

    Top Bar National

I did a search but found nothing, so... has anybody tried and succeeded using top bars in national brood box instead of conventional frames? It is something I'd like to try, any tips any one?

    Test frame and piping?

Just checked my two colonies, one has six frames of brood and plenty of stores the other has very little sealed brood left and no eggs. It was looking okay last week, probably 4 frames of brood. So I took a frame of eggs from the q+ colony and placed it in the other. I then heard what I...

    Apilifevar in poly hives?

I've just extracted my first honey from 2 poly hives and have already bought my apilifevar which I was planning to start next week. However I just read on the paynes website that it isn't suitable for poly hives, they say it will melt the polystyrene. Anybody had any experience of this?

    Out Apiary Rent

I've recently approached a friendly farmer who seems happy for me to place an out apiary on his land, we are going to look at potential locations next week. My question is, how much rent do people pay for their out apiaries?
