    Stock-karte.de Inspection cards

This popped up on my Instagram, an inspection record that goes on the hive rather than a piece of paper under the roof or a phone app. I like the simplicity but can see some flaws. No capacity to record brood quantity or disease concerns, lack of Varroa treatment record, honey harvested, dates...

    Candle making trouble shooting

Making a few candles using silicone moulds, I often get the cavities shown below as the wax solidifies. The wax was at 70-71°C when poured, room and mould temperature was 18°C. Any tips please on how to correct? I have been pouring some more wax in once they have cooled but would prefer to get...

    Hives at Warwick Castle

At Warwick Castle, right next to the path used by 100s of people every day from the car park to the entrance. Didn't see àny Warwick Castle honey on sale or any honeybees on the abundant rhododendron although it was a cool 15°c on the day of my visit.

Austrian Bees article in New York Times

Interesting article with some relevance to advocates for keeping pure lines of bees. Online link to article here as well https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/04/world/europe/austria-bees-carinthia-carniolan.html

    Nonnettes de Dijon

I saw these in a French supermarket The recipe below looks straightforward technically but unusual in how you work out how much flour, butter, honey, marmalade etc. If you can make 1:1 and 2:1 syrup it should be a doddle🙃 http://www.farine-mc.com/2014/02/nonnettes-de-dijon.html One to try...

    Courgettes as nectar source

Visited one of apiaries today and in one substantial neighbouring field (~5 acres possibly) they've planted it up with courgettes to supply the catering trade. The plants have about 4-6 leaves at the moment so are a good few weeks from flowering. I know honeybees can pollinate courgettes (and...

Abelo 20 frame extractor tangential screens

I have a 20 frame Abelo extractor and want to order some tangential screens whilst the weekend special offer is on. I'm assuming 2 fit and are placed opposite each other but would 4 fit, placed in a square? I can't see any dimensions to check on the abelo or lyson websites.

    30lb Plastic buckets

I need some 10litre (~30lb) plastic buckets for my bumper 2022 crop 😀 I could get some at Beetradex (but it's the only purchase planned in the absence of several key suppliers) or through ebay, link here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321093758241 The cost is similar with the quantity required...

    Grey Bees, Andrey Kurkov

Just watching the news about Russian troop movements along the Ukranian border reminded me about this book by Andrey Kurkov about a beekeeper caught in the grey/neutral zone between Russia and the Ukraine. I enjoyed it; the author appears to have a genuine understanding of beekeeping and the...

    Identifying hives that are followers

Inspected most hives yesterday. The good flow that was making every frame drip with nectar last week has come to a halt in SE Worcestershire. One apiary plagued by aggressive folllowers which I need to sort. First issue to resolve will be to work out which hive(s) - I'm fairly sure the majority...

    Flaming wooden boxes

The first time a wooden box is flame scorched it is straightforward to see where has been done. How do you ensure it is done thoroughly when it needs to be done again? Or are wooden boxes only scorched when EFB is suspected/confirmed and you'd have to be very unlucky to have it twice? (I've...

    Honey buckets - couriers

I have a request for a couple of 30lb buckets of honey to be delivered by courier. The buyer suggested Royal Mail and says that it would be £44. Any experience with sending buckets of honey? And any advice on how to package the buckets to avoid breakages. The honey is very much set so is not liquid.

    Heart shaped wild comb

Interesting twitter thread on the real origin of this Long thread but worth a quick read https://twitter.com/byrnesong/status/1273040654831058944?s=20 TLDR: Capensis bees in South Africa given some, but not complete, foundation guidance.

    Children first fishing rod recommendations

Hi I'm lucky that my parents-in-law live very close to the river Teme downstream of Tenbury Wells with easy access possible to both private water and Birmingham AA stretches. I've fished there with a fly for trout and grayling and my children are now showing an interest. There are some barbel...
