    Free Bees - Well Almost!

I wish I had seen this earlier! If the sale does fall through I would be interested in some. I'm only across town from you.

    polishing slate

It depends alot on the individual slate but you'll be amazed at the finish you can get with wet and dry. It'll take a while, use plenty of water and don't start too coarse or you'll do more harm than good.

    Hoopoe - friend or foe?

There is rarely a year that we don't get a lost one showing up in this part of South Devon. I've seen one twice, several years apart but both in our yard.

    National bee supplies

I've never mailed ordered from them but I have been lucky enough to visit their shop, the staff were fantastic and the quality is great. I'll be using them again.

    Dowsing

I'm naturally a skeptical person with all things like this and like to have a scientific explanation to everything, but I have had first hand experience of dowsing working. We were having a well drilled and the drilling company first sent an old guy with a rod, he paced the field and marked a...

    Bees at entrance overnight

Not sure about the 'june gap' down here in South Devon as there seems to be plenty in flower especially now the bramble is coming out but very little is being brought in by the bees. I think it's just too dry and there is very little rain forecast this week.

    Woah that hurt!!

I'm sure I read somewhere that they home in on the rapid movement of the eyes blinking.

    Strawberries

I love the first strawberry picking, I've had about 10lb so far this year!

    Macro '0n-the-wing' shots

Macro isn't my thing so can't help you there but the great thing about the canon dslr cable release is they use 2.5mm stereo jacks with one wire to ground acting as the autofocus/metering 'half press' and the other to ground to open the shutter 'full press' So if you are handy with a soldering...

    water supply

There are loads of different water sources around my bees, ponds, troughs etc but they are currently going mad for the water on top of a load of lime mortar we have maturing, I'm sure they know what they are doing but it must be very caustic.

    Broody chickens

We leave them in the cage day and night but move the cage into a secure shed at night.

    Broody chickens

You don't need to haul it into the air, we used to have a dedicated broody coup but now use a puppy/small dog cage, the broody is shut in with food and water somewhere fairly open this tends to put them off after a day or few! Also collect eggs as often as you can as leaving them lying around...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Wow that's some bees, hive one day extract 25lbs the next! ;-)

    Horse bedding in Devon?

Local agricultural merchants (mole valley farmers or Cornwall farmers down this way) will stock it but only in large bags/bales your best bet for a small quantity would be to find a horsey person and see if you can grab a small amount. Si.

    Do swallows eat bees?

We have several swallows nesting close to some of my hives and I swear I have produced more swallow food than honey in the last couple of years!

    It's raining hard

We had a shower this morning in South Devon, not very much just enough to wet the road, didn't last to long and has been a warm and dry since.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I found a cracking site for my second out apiary, a nice clearing/glade in a small copse on a local farm. It's not too far from the road but well hidden, sheltered and gets a good bit of sun. Time will tell if it's any good for the bees.

    Millar feeder

I've made all my crownboards with a bee space on just one side so when using the feeder I just turn it over to form a tight fitting lid, no drowning problems so far.

Break out the supers - OSR in flower!

Mine aren't ready to make any real use of the rape at the moment. But looking around Kingsbridge I think the fields first mentioned do appear to be ahead of the rest, and it is still early.

Break out the supers - OSR in flower!

Yup, I noticed the same fields outside Kingsbridge early this week, then it was just a few flowers starting to show yellow, I reckon we have a week or two more until there is any real quantity. I haven't noticed any of the fields towards Salcombe or Thurlestone flowering yet though.
