    swarm now a colony

It's more a matter of interest. I am 60, been keeping bees for 30 years, and I have seen swarms build comb for a few days while scouts are out looking for a new site, but never seen a swarm stay so exposed for so long. I am only assuming there is brood, as they have been there for 10-12 weeks...

    swarm now a colony

Height is no issue, it's only about 8' So access is not a problem. I am thinking of setting up my Ali scaffold under it, that way I can work in relative comfort.and I can use the tower platform to put my box on.

    swarm now a colony

I just had an email with photos of a May/June swarm that established itself in the cluster spot on the tree. It is now fully established with comb and brood, but is exposed to the elements and predators. How the hell it has not been wasp attacked yet I just dont know, I have trouble with my...

No, but neither does my wife:)

    frames for cut-outs?

I have had my wife on hand when doing cut outs, she does all the wiring up, bless her. But I have seen some plans to make folding frames to make cut outs easy single handed. The frame is hinged at the bottom wired both sides, you lay the cut out natural comb on the wires of one inside and bring...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Caught a swarm from a swarm I collected in May. I must admit to only having opened the May swarm twice since hiving it and had not dreamt it would swarm this year. I keep only 1st year swarms at home, all established colonies are at my out apiaries, so when I was told I had a swarm at home I...

How many apiaries in your neck of the woods?

When you decide to ask someone if you can keep bees on their land, use the plight of the bee as reason for expanding your hives, if their plot is suitable and they like bees your on a winner. I was called to collect a swarm from a golf course a couple of years back, and when i left the...

    Very high swarm

Easier said than done. Lots of large properties on the high street with long rear gardens, who knows who has a hive or two tucked away. Plus, shed loads of victorian chimney pots for feral bees.

    Very high swarm

Only for a few days as I do not think the owner of the shop likes it. When I asked to place it he was all worried about HSE and his insurance in case the bees did take to it and someone/customer got stung. So I have to take it away.

    Very high swarm

Well my lovely brood box that looked to be so interesting to them yesterday was rejected just now as they have moved on. Suppose I Will get a call from the someone or the council about a swarm the other end of the High Street soon no doubt!

    Very high swarm

Not such a classic height unfortunately. I have taken two swarms from this High Street location for the past 2 years. One day a week they have market day on the wide grass verge here, one swarm clustered on the underside of a market traders table. That time the Police coned off half the high...

    Beekeeper food processing registration

As well as bees, we have other livestock, particularly goats and sometimes sell milk and cheese. We are registered by our local authority but the definition you quote exempts us from all the usual formalities although environmental health still advise and encourage us to follow all the usual...

    Very high swarm

Yesterday evening went to get a swarm that was apparently quite high in a Lime tree. They were not joking, my swarm catcher was nowhere near long enough and I didn't have a cherry picker in my back pocket. So I placed a bait hive on the canopy of an adjacent shop. Today there is great interest...

Joining the RAB hedgerow rejuvenation project

Must repair it. My wife parked our defender into the back of a liquid gas tanker. Direct line ins did not even want to look at it when told both wings, front grill and bonnet damaged. Instant write off. "we will recover it to salvage" was their plan of action. No way is it a write off, it's...
