    Beehaus

Year 3 I have had my beehaus for 3 years (also have National 12 x 14 too) and have found it to be very good. You will appreciate working at a suitable height, and once you get used to working from the side, it will be fine! The large frames allow a good build up of brood and adding supers...

    Pensioners

As usuaul lots of negative comments from those who do not have one.http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/images/smilies/wink.gif Just feel I need to say in support - 1. Good working height (for me at least) 2. Excellent insulation (it coped really well during our recent long cold winter, and...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

weak hive Checked my only remaining hive - worried that it is very weak and really needs good weather to build up to decent size. Feeding with syrrup Lost one hive - nest got too small and froze I think - plenty of stores available, and the Queen died in the second. I had to amalgamate both...

    The Weather

Spring or not spring? Just like other posters - bizarre weather here too. Sun it hot and when the wind is light - beautiful with full on buzzing bees. But yesterday lunch time - temp dropped and we had huge hailstones! Enough to make me go inside, wonder what a huge hailstone does to a...

    OSR Watch

No rape flowing here! I assumed the rape had been abandoned this year. Last year The fields around the house were all glowing yellow, and the bees were working flat out. I took honey off at Easter! This year, there is nothing. perhaps like other posters - just delayed?

    My Bees Swarmed Today

http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/Smiles/iagree.gifMy bees swarmed too! Quite unexpected. The day was not overly warm. Sat out after work at about 6.30pm - bees seemed OK. Came in and made telephone call. Looking out of the window, saw dark blob on hedge I didn't recognise. Sure enough a...

    Bees between supers

Not sure if I understand you right, but if you mean problems with bees just climbing from the QE up the super sides, my tip is to push the second super close the the first with the bottom against the top of the first, then slowely slide the second super down the side of the first. The bees...

my beehaus arrives in 2 weeks ... any tips?

Yes, it will mean that I can't use the other side to head off swarming - that being said, they swarmed twice last year despite having done everything possible to prevent it and they had plenty of room:willy_nilly::willy_nilly: I don' t know what type of Queen I have. I lost a Queen last year...

my beehaus arrives in 2 weeks ... any tips?

All this negativity! I have a Beehaus and I think it is great. It is well insulated so good during summer and winter. Bees have thrived and even had honey last year, even though I started with a Nuc. Only criticism is in transferring from shallow frames of Nuc to deep frames in Beehaus. The...

    Deadsville

Hi Dave, No they didn't build bridge comb - just drone comb. The plan is to gradually move these to each side so that they are full of honey and no worker bee brood and then remove them. The drone larvae can be used to check for verroa of course.

    Deadsville

Hi, I have had a Beehaus for a year, so this is my first full year bee keeping. I find those who don't like the idea of a plastic hive, really don't like the idea! I did a lot of research before buying it and felt the cost for two hives was reasonable. It is very easy to work, being at a...

    Virgin queens

as a bit of an aside.... Due to colony repeatedly making queen cells - I split the hive on 16th May, leaving one capped (yes capped!) queen cell. Inspecting the hive today, I expected to see the cell hinged open, but to my surprise, there are now 5 capped Q cells and 1 uncapped. As the...

    shallow nuc frames

Thanks all. No, I got the nuc from local BKeeper in the Association - not from Omlet. I will attempt the extensions as suggested.

    shallow nuc frames

I am a new BK and have transferred Nuc frames into the Beehaus. As they are smaller, the bees have created new drone comb at the bottom. The advice in the Omlet book is to put cardboard below the frames - but they just ate through it and chucked it out of the bottom of the hive! I have...
