    After some sympathy

Bad day, had a gut feeling about two hives all winter. Reduced down to four hives in the autumn. Sadly I was right. A handful of bees dead on both omf boards and the hives still packed with food. 50 percent losses. Haven't had a winter like that for thirty years. My guess is not enough winter bees.

    Bbka magazine

For those of you who ever open the bbka mag, the new layout is much better and this month's mag is quite interesting. I am neither for or against the bbka, just saying.

Instant vap, used for first time

Just used my instant vap for the first time. Does anyone else have one and how do you use it if you have a landing board. I was able to tilt mine but it meant I had to hold it while I was using it and the gap that was left reduced the effectiveness. Thinking about drilling a small hole in the...

    Need help with honey tubs

I have always put my honey in jars straight from the settling tank but this year has been a bumper crop so I bought some 15lb tubs from thrones. Needed some more honey in jars today so I got out a tub. First ....how do you get the lid off? I turned up the lip round the edge and in end had to...

    Freezing tubs

I know if I freeze a jar of runny honey it stays runny until defrosted. If I froze a 15lb tub of runny honey would the same thing happen? Just wondered if it was an alternative to heating it.

    Beware the shake test

Just to say I had eight uncapped frames. Couldn't shake anything out of them but refractometer reads 21. Put them back for the bees to finish off!

queen cell in third super up

Putting a clearer board on the top super of three supers today. Checked frames to make sure they were all capped and right in the centre of one frame was a perfect, charged, queen cell. Not sure how it got there but it had to go as I wanted to clear the super and they wouldn't have left it. No...

    Dead bees hurt more

That is the second time I have picked up a frame when extracting with a dead bee under the lug. Why do they always hurt more? Fat finger they call me now :icon_204-2: :icon_204-2:

Nearly had a swarm in the chimney

Luckily my wife spotted the bees coming down the chimney so a smoky fire stopped the scouts. Two bait hives in my garden now. I wonder what the chances are. The swarm is from a local hive high in a tree in a nearby garden.

Never do an inspection on April 1st!

Hit 18⁰ here so decided to inspect a couple of hives. Put a queen excluder between a brood and a half boxes. Looked for the queen in the half. There she is...a big golden one..promptly flew off! I swear I heard her shout April Fool. Decided to combine very small hive with a queen with a queen...

    enrico's mumblings

With regard the latest murmurings about the BBKA mag. I wrote three lots for the series of bemused. I doubt the others will ever be published so I have included them in my blog. A better read for beginners rather than the more discerning amongst you These are the links...

    Beemused part 3

Sometimes I wonder if beekeeping was the hobby for me. I never really meant for it to be anything other than a hive in the garden but we all know what a pie in the sky hope that is! I am lucky to live in the countryside and have been able to give a large part of my garden over to my collection...

    Beemused part 2

Beemused part 2 I make no apologies for not being much of a biologist and I confess to opening the BBKA Magazine and looking at the detailed pictures of a bees anatomy and letting out a sigh of disappointment knowing that the next few pages will mean little or nothing to me. The closest I come...

    My musings!

Musings on a subject I guess I never thought that beekeeping would be easy but then again it never crossed my mind that it would be so hard. It seems to me that it is a hobby that is surrounded by myths and legends that we simply pass on. I started keeping bees over 40 years ago on nothing...

    I am in print again!

I felt a bit guilty suggesting to you all that you should try and contribute to the bbka magazine rather than slag it off so I decided to write a tongue in cheek article giving me chance to poke fun at the matchstick brigade. They have decided to print the first one in the December issue. Feel...
