Amount of royal jelly in queen cells

Bees store a copious amount of royal jelly in the queen cups, so the larva is floating on the jelly. The worker be inspecting the cell should "know" somehow how deep the jelly is. What could be the regulation mechanism to signal that it is enough? Perhaps she is touching the bottom with her tongue?

    Virgins above the queen excluder

6 weeks ago I united some average colonies to get strong hives for the flow of robinia. I took off the queen and put the brood box on top of a queenright family and excluder. The honey I harvested and put back the empty frames. Now I took off the supers with bees to be combined with mating nucs...

    Observation hollow tree

One month ago I installed a swarm in this hollow tree. It is exciting to watch how they develop day after day.

    Bumblebees

I have a bumblebee (bombus terrestris) colony bought from a rearing company. I have put a plexiglass cover on the top of the box and can watch what is going on inside. I see eggs, larvae, pupae, honey cups, pollen cups etc. Can someone tell me how to distinguish the worker, male and queen...

    Hygienic behaviour - natural selection

Exactly 50 years ago Rothenbuhler discovered that colonies that show this behavior are resistant to AFB. This is clearly advantageous to the colony (and to the beekeeper). However only 10 - 12 % of the colonies have this trait. In the competition it seems most often the lower or not hygienic...

Why do larvae crawl out from the comb?

I believe I am not the only one who have experienced this behavior. If I leave a comb with 3-5 days old larvae outside without bees, most of the larvae crawl out and drop on the bottom. Is there an explanation why they do this, and what prevents them from doing it in a comb covered by bees?

How to put not matching combs next to each other

A few days ago I combined some of the weakest families with the newspaper method. The day after I put all the frames with brood together. I have encountered only one problem: I could not push together the not matching combs. Especially the thick capped honey on the top made trouble. When I...

    Queen selection

I am thinking about an objective method to select the best mated queens to be used in production. Let's assume that you have 100 mated queens at the end of June and by the beginning of September you want to keep only 20 of them to go in winter. I stress that I am not talking about breeding but...

    Queen marking with RFID chip

I am looking for an affordable reader + RFID chips small enough to be glued to a mated queen. The reading distance would be nice to be at least 25-30 cm. Can you give me directions where to start? (books, articles, suppliers) Thank you

What is the typical pH of nectar?

In Italy some beekeeper mix the juice of a lemon in 10 kg of sugar to make syrup. Could it help in inverting the sugar quickly in autumn? Perhaps they use even olive oil in pollen patties :).
