    Old honey filled brood

Due to bad weather and work, it’s the first time I’ve been though the bees this year, changed to new brood boxes floors etc. I have two hives that did not make it though winter. possibly varroa related. Question is both had two full brood boxes of honey to see them though winter, and some part...

What is going on no queen ????

I’ve one colony double brood went queen less about 5 weeks ago, so queen cells nothing, she just vanished. I put a test frame in with eggs and young larvae, again nothing. I’ve been though this colony with a fine comb, there is definitely no queen present. Even the noise they make says no queen...

    Adding a 2nd brood box

    Adding a super

What’s your thoughts on adding supers. Directly above the brood box or over the first super. Or straight on top. reason I ask is. The one above brood box always gets full of pollen, at least the middle 5 frames. I’ve always gone over the BB but it’s got me thinking what other do.

    Combining two hives.

I’m looking to combine two hives, but best way to but a single brood onto a hive with two supers. I can‘t do it the other way round as the single brood is in a different part of the garden, which I use for nucs. Now wanting to combine with a queenless hive.

    Old queen piping noises

I’ve heard plenty of times of virgin queens making a piping noise but never an old queen. on inspection yesterday, I came across sealed queen cells and no eggs, I knew they had not swarmed, so finding the queen, I left 1 cell and put here in a nuc. On inspection checking no queen cells going...

    1st full inspection

with Work and the weather it’s been a nightmare trying to get though the bees, it’s been so cold . I’d done a box and floor change early March, on that brief warm day we had. Yesterday was nice, and I knew one of the hives would be full to busting, and going away in a few weeks I wanted to avoid...

    Strong smelling honey

Over the years of having bees, most of my honey comes from Himalayan balsam, which is very light honey, but this year the honey seems dark and strong smelling, Any ideas could be ivy ? Lots of white pollen going in the hives at the moment.

    Drawing supers

I’ve got one hive on DB and a good colony, I’ve had a super on for 2weeks, when I inspected, no bees in there at al. All foundation none of it touched, I have a few part filled ones I will put in to hope encourage them. But very strange, not one bee in there.

    pollen bound

Having looking into one of my hives I found a colony with so much pollen the queen is laying on about 2-3 frames, some frames are full of pollen others are just patches in-between brood, no full frames for laying, I have taken 2 frames out which were a few year old and getting a bit dark anyway...

    Not drawing wax

About 4 weeks ago, in a rare break in the weather, I did an inspection, all was good, queen laying on 7 frames, so I put on an other brood box and put on some feed, the weather then went like middle of winter again, so not much chance of going into the bees, I checked the feed was being taken...

    Shook swarm frames

I have loads of frames from a shook swarm, I have lots of frames with brood and lots of frames with both brood and honey, and then frames with just honey. Over the years I've just had a bonfire with the brood frames and kept the full honey frames, It does seem a shame to lose all that honey in...
