    Too cold for Apilife- var

I have not put the next treatment on due three days ago due to torrential rains and temps below 16c I assume that it would'nt work effectively in these temps anyway but what impact will it have on the bees if delayed?? I will resume treatment asap (ie when it stops raining and warms up!) I am...

    Unripe honey storage?

I have one hive with a super on with very little capped honey (when I peep they have capped/uncapped/ capped again!). I am assuming that they are needing to use these stores but I do want to get some varroa treatment on asap. I have a clearing board insitu. Question : Sadly it looks like no...

    failing nuc....

On advice split a hive that was about to swarm ( 6 june) - queen cell (capped) food, lovely brood, eggs, bees, then shook in more bee...all looked lovely. then On my return after a couple of days away it did'nt "look right". Had a look - few bees (few dead but i thing they are chucking them out...

Queenless colony - trying to re queen??

My main hive is sadly depeted with no signs of a queen - no eggs, few drones. I tried to split (on advice due to multiple QC about three weeks ago - this failed - it coincided with the sudden frosts). I have heard queen/s piping until recently (2 days ago). checked yesterday. Very depleted -...

Should I be removing this now, esp now it is so warm? Regards Floss

    Queen piping...

I had the wonderful experience tonight of sitting by my hive with an old stethoscope listening to the queen (s) piping (yes, it was, I checked it out on line!) along with the extroidinary range of other communication going on in my strongest colony! An amazing sound! So I would recommend...

    Contact feeders leaking

Under advice I am feeding a couple of colonies in an attempt to draw foundation as I am short of drawn comb. The feeders insist on slowly leaking - apparently from the mesh - but leaving quite a mess in the eke and trickling down the outside...flipping nuisance!... but I have used them before...

    Drone cells in super????!

Inspected my strong colony 2 days ago - seems to be doing well so wondered if it needs another super (has one). In the middle of 4th/5th frame (of super)in there were what looked liked capped drone cells dotted between cells of nectar. Also a couple of queen cups in centre of one frame. Also...

    Another brood and half question...

I know there is a similar thread but did not want to hijack another post. I left a super on one hive last year with some honey. This colony seems smaller than other, has been slower to become active but now there is activity although I have not seen much pollen going in. I am feeding on 1:1...

    Two questions....

May I ask.... a) how long one should leave fondant on for? b) one of my hives is showing tan coloured streaks/spots around entrance this week. Few dead bees but not hundreds. I have not looked inside this year - too cold I think yet. Could this be dysentry/Nosema and if so, should I treat now...

    Fondant- should I leave it?

Put me fondant on as discussed over Christmas. Had a quick peak and do not seem to have touched it! Should I leave it on? Poor things must be working hard this weather (we have - 14c ) so am I right in assuming it may come in useful later when low on stores. I am away for couple of weeks -...

    Feeding Fondant

newbie question - got some lovely fondant for a mid winter feast... Question: It is quite a chunk - I am assuming I will have to put an eke/super on like when feeding syrup ....? Sorry - daft question maybe - but my first winter with my bees! Many tx Floss

    Dead bees around entrance

Not many( 10's not 100's), but there does appear to be a steady flow of dead/dying bees under the hive (my apparently strongest, flying well and bringing in store, just finished feeding and brood feels full of stores). Their wings look ok, no varroa on them, the odd drone is being hefted out...

    ? DWV... what to do?

I have been observing for a few days the removal of bees from my strongest colony. I have noticed that many these seem to have deformed wings. I am talking maybe a couple of 100 rather than thousands but I have seen them flying off over the hedge with them! This colony has been very busy...

Bees clearing hive or something else to worry about!

I have recently noticed a small number of dead bees appearing outside one of my hives (there were 12 outside the hive entrance this morning as if they had been ejected as part of a clean!). Am I right in assuming that this is normal at this time of year as the colony reduces? I have seen 2...

Ignoring Apiguard - shal I remove?

My 2 hives seem to be ignoring the stuff! One pack has been in each hive for 2 and 3 weeks respectively and about 50% removed. it has been warm and I can smell it! There has been a varroa drop in one but the other hive has a floor attatched (came insitu) and I am anxious to get an omf on asap...

    Apiguard - too late?

With the bad weather and trying to clear supers etc have I left it too late to apiguard? I know not all bee keepers do use this and wondered whether I could concentrate on feeding instead and use oxylic acid midwinter? I have "Apiguarded" my smaller colony although it has taken a while to go...

Porter bee escapes - how long?

I am trying to clear my supers using a porter bee escape so I can take some honey but also I want to apiguard them. I checked yesterday (after 24hrs) but still lots of bees so I am leaving them another 24hrs but the weather is cold and wet! How long can I leave the bee escapes on? Tx Floss

    Apiguard/feeding...

Bear with me - I have another newbee question! I am waiting to borrow an extracter which I should get mid week but there not much to extract, happy for bees to have it if they need. Anyway - this colony has slowed down but seems ok and I suspect using honey they have stored in the supers. I...

How much honey did you get this year?

I am curious, as a year 1 bee keeper, was this a good year for honey? My bees, although thriving early on in the summer, swarmed and were slow to re queen. They have 2 supers with full but mostly uncapped honey comb. I suspect they are munching through the supplies themselves! I know mid...
