    Too cold for Apilife- var

Cheers RAB - point taken - I worried that i may chill any brood and, yes, worried about the cold and wet! Many tx

    Too cold for Apilife- var

I have not put the next treatment on due three days ago due to torrential rains and temps below 16c I assume that it would'nt work effectively in these temps anyway but what impact will it have on the bees if delayed?? I will resume treatment asap (ie when it stops raining and warms up!) I am...

    Almost made me cry!

What two frame extractor????? Having only a pithering bit of honey for myself this year it is soooo precious and I don't want to waste any - have looked on forum but can't find any plans for this???? I know what you mean though, milkermal - it is amazing and quite humbling when I see the honey...

    Unripe honey storage?

Thank you all for your replies - all helpful. The porter bee escapes actually did the job this year and the super was completely free yesterday after 24hrs! It had less honey than a few days ago! When I checked the brood most space seems taken up with brood and eggs! Never fear Arfermo, I have...

    Busy bees yesterday

Mine seem to be ignoring the balsam by the river so far so there must be something scrummier - there seems to be evening primrose ( those yellow ragged petticoats!) and some bright orange and pale yellow pollen - I was on moorland yesterday and there were so many bees working the heather which...

    Unripe honey storage?

I have one hive with a super on with very little capped honey (when I peep they have capped/uncapped/ capped again!). I am assuming that they are needing to use these stores but I do want to get some varroa treatment on asap. I have a clearing board insitu. Question : Sadly it looks like no...

Feed and treat for Varroa at the same time

A bee inspector informed us last week that you can feed with apilife var on - they may be reluctant to take the feed but you can. Put the apilife on top of the frames, then cover board, then feed. I have feed on 2 hives drawing frames and they have taken donw the feed no probs despite the...

    Weather and feeding

My two colonies swarmed this year despite attempts to talk them out of it and are taking a while to build up again seemingly - I have only one super in use at the mo!

Bees to the side or centre of your brood box?

    Many thanks Onge!

Bees to the side or centre of your brood box?

So, (without wishes to hi jack this thread!) when you transfer a nuc into hive one should put the frames already occupied by bees at one end rather than in the middle leaving the empty frames/foundation and other end??? Floss

Swarm into bait hive advice please

First - fantastic! Second - I am not sure as my bait hive is very empty! I imagine someone more experienced will be along shortly but I would imagine that you should leave the super off until they have sorted themselves out in the brood box. Otherwise sounds about right what you are doing!

    failing nuc....

Tx you both and sorry for my late response - I did contact the bee inspector and he said basically the same as your good selves and this makes perfect sense to me (now!). I felt very demoralised as it is the 2nd time I have attempted this but he is coming over to go through my hives with me this...

    failing nuc....

On advice split a hive that was about to swarm ( 6 june) - queen cell (capped) food, lovely brood, eggs, bees, then shook in more bee...all looked lovely. then On my return after a couple of days away it did'nt "look right". Had a look - few bees (few dead but i thing they are chucking them out...

    entrance block

Yep - thats about right! Some do, some don't! I have been advised to leave on if the colony is small or there is a risk of robbing from other bees or wasps etc (the latter more likely later in summer). If it is really hot and the bee's are "hanging" off the front of the hive I have removed it...

    To die for

Hmmm...interesting thread/comments - my understanding is that Buddism is a "philosophy" rather than a "religion" and, as Davethegas points out, it is the "intent" of an action/thought which is significant. I have been beekeeping just one year having considered taking it up for some time - I...

Queenless colony - trying to re queen??

Many tx Mike. I have been away over the weekend but will have a shufty the first opportunity and pop a frame in from my strongest colony (which is probably getting ready to swarm anyway !). I have been thinking about it and it will certainly give the bees some time back as others have commented...

    Understood - many thanks!

Queenless colony - trying to re queen??

Point taken but I do have capped QC's in this hive (2 outside brood area in centre of frame on undrawn foundation). Would you suggest a frame of brood now or wait?

Queenless colony - trying to re queen??

Thank you both - I am going to see what happens and if no go in a couple of weeks I will put in a frame of brood from my thriving colony. I don't want to upset their natural state although I appreciate that swarming is'nt always desirable which is what I have been unsuccesful in avoiding! I am...
