    Paper re allergy and immunotherapy

I had my first ever systemic reaction in fifteen years of beekeeping to three or four stings at once yesterday, three on my hand, one on my lip when a colony got quite angry as the weather changed. I was wearing a suit and gloves, but they got in. Breathing was laboured but not constricted...

    Instant/effortless Swarm collection

There was no queen. I gave them a frame with eggs with which to raise a new queen which they did.

    Instant/effortless Swarm collection

A friend who knows I keep bees called me to a swarm. It was a fairly small swarm on the ground a couple of miles away. As I arrived I suspected that they were on the floor due to a lost/dead queen. This is something I have seen before. At the time I ended up using brood to lure them into my box...

    Bee-quick

Many, once the rag is saturated with the smell, they keep moving and you don't need to respray for each super.

    Bee-quick

Not much that I've noticed, I tend to use it the late in the day. It is more effective in warm weather because of evaporation.

    Bee-quick

I use it. Spray on a teacloth, and cover the entire super on a warm day, leave for around 5 minutes. Makes life easier when keeping bees in a urban area. Wouldn't do without it.

    Clipping Queens

There is evidence, to the contrary from a controlled study. Clipping does not lead to supercedure. Forster, I.W., 1971. Effect of clipping queen honey bees' wings. New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 14(2), pp.535-537. In around 80 hives over a few years clipping did not lead to...

    Clipping Queens

If you keep bees in an urban area, clipping is all but essential. I haven't lost a swarm for a few years (famous last words). I clip whenever I can, I don't recall having had a clipped queen superceded ever.

I thought there was the start of a lime flow here in London judging by my hives so I came to see what others are saying. Privet hedge is flowering too and lime tends to flower around the same time. Happy days.

    Swarm Season

Just had a swarm call near Finsbury Park, you know what they say a swarm in July, isn't worth a fly, but I'll go for them soon if they're still there.

My strong colonies seem to be filling out supers in North London, not sure how much longer we have though. Normally things wind down around about now, but perhaps not this year...

My rule of thumb is that lime flowers with privet hedge which is flowering, but I have seen flower debris under lime trees, :(

Lime is flowering in London, but with this weather, things are looking a bit sad at the moment.

    Interesting Swarm Collection

I was called to a swarm today at a council estate in Tottenham. The bees were on the floor on a couple of steps near a play area, and there were lots of flying bees. I looked through the cluster for the queen and spotted her. I blew the bees around her and realised she seemed dead which is why I...

Privet seems to flower at the same time, I bet a large proportion of the London flow is privet too. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk
