    it had to happen

removing supers yesterday, I slipped and fell. I used the poly super to break my fall, unfortunately it hit the ground in such a way that the two dove tails sheared. I would welcome any advice on the best way to effect a suitable repair.

    Curious about queen behaviour

I was watching my bees today and noticed a small cluster of bees on the landing board. A close look revealed that the cluster was around the recently hatched queen. (still in Q cell on Tuesday) The behaviour of the bees did not appear friendly as they seemed to be trying to prevent the queen...

    Queen Rearing

Last year I bought a queen which I understand is of slovinian origin. I like the temprement and I have noticed that the colony gets started foraging well before the other hives in the apiary. So I am considering raising some new queens from her slovinian majesty. However I have heard that the...

    Rosehip Syrup

Having been attacked by a dog rose today I was reminded of school days when I used to collect rosehips and wondered if it is possible to make my own rosehip syrup.

    The roof is back

Five hours and three people later and the roof was back on. It was a good excuse to have a good clean out and a lot of old woodwork was disposed of. The bees are doing ok and this Sunday 6th March I had a look at the pollen patties that I had put on last week. The results were interesting. The...

    Where's the roof?

Just enjoying a leisurely Sunday morning and thinking about braving the rain to go and check my own bees and the association hives when the phone rings. It is my mother "I think you had better come early as I think one of the hives has lost a roof". We normally go to Sunday lunch so it was...

    Honey Refractometer

I have had problems with heather honey fermenting in the jar. I am assuming that is because the moisture content was too high, so I am thinking of buying a refractometer for this summer. I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the £12 to £20 versions on a well known auction site or should I...

    Bees in schools 2

Following the success of the bees at my sons' school, my brother's school in Leeds expressed interest in also having bees and my brother asked me for help. Being over 100 miles away I contacted LBKA to see if they could help. In early January a local beekeeper and I met the teachers from the...

    Bees in Schools

Early in 2010 my sons' school approached the local association with a view to starting a bee project at the school. This would be part of the internationally recognised ecology project that the school has been running within its Eco centre for the last four years. After some discussion two...

    Keswick Bees

While at work today I had a quick look at the 2 hives I have in the wilderness area, which is part of my employers commitment to the environment. The company had an environmental audit recently and the person conducting the audit was both pleased and impressed that space had been for honey bees...

    Keswick Bees

The Keswick association was given 8 colonies by a beekeeper who was retiring. They proved to be a mixed blessing, being quite agressive to the point where of being unmanagable. In the end we decided to requeen them. It would seem that this had the desired affect with things being much calmer...
