Hi all, We want to bring our association into the 20th century (21st century comes later:eek:) so we are looking for web based membership and subscription software. We've had a look at WebCollect and have had Clubbuzz recommended. What do you guys use? Thanks Dave

Biopotency and activity in honey - what does it mean?

I've just read in the June 2012 edition of Beecraft about Chilean Rainforest honey. The article on page 5 quotes "The 100% pure Chilean honey is derived from the unpolluted and uninhabited volcanic areas of Chile and is incredibly potent because it is raw and unpasturised to maintain activity...

Poly Hive - which to buy?

I would like to try a poly hive this season. It has to be National or 14 x 12 and compatible with my wooden supers. So far I've found 3 suppliers Paynes, Modern Beekeeping and Beehive Supplies. I've trawled through numerous posts on here and still can't decide. :banghead: Which one would you...

    Any Ubuntu experts?

Hi Guys and Gals, I don't want to appear to be a complete dork by asking a couple of questions on the Ubuntu forum so I thought I'd get a more sympathetic audience here :nopity: I'm in the process of setting up a spare laptop with Ubuntu (11.xx) as I'm fed up with Windows. Q1. Can you import...

    Bee Factoids

An ex-colleague of mine is doing a short talk about bees and is looking for facts about bees. For example, how much does a worker bee weigh, how much nectar or pollen can she carry, how fast does a worker fly, how many bee miles does it take to make a pound of honey. Thanks

On another list, I read with great sadness that Dave Cushman has died. A great loss to beekeeping.

    A mathematician required

My other hobby is astronomy :coolgleamA: I have an 8" Newtonian reflector using a Dobsonian mount. The mount is pushed around by hand to wherever you want to look. No computerised "goto" for me. However, I want to make the 'scope a bit easier to use by having scales on the horizontal and...

    Charging sealed Lead acid batteries

A bit off the wall this one but here goes anyway ... I have a Yuasa 12 volt 1.2 amp sealed lead acid battery which acts as a backup for my burglar alarm. According to the alarm control panel the battery is flat. A short power cut last week confirmed this. This battery is approx 2 years old...

To treat or not to treat?

The more I read about treating bees for various diseases and pests the more I become confused. I've been reading through Michael Bush's website and came across this "How much do we upset the balance of this rich ecosystem when applying anti-bacterials such as tylan or terramycin and...

    Drone raising and Varroa

I wanted to increase the chances that my virgins mated with drones from a colony that is really nice to handle, so allowed several brood cycles of drones to be reared in it. The first pack of Apiguard in this colony killed thousands of varroa with a similar amount with the second pack. I've...

    A new frame design?

I've just spent the afternoon cleaning up my supers and frames ready for winter. Most of my super frames are Manleys and there was a huge amount of propolis on the frame edges where they butt up to the next frame. Has anyone seen or tried a Hoffman design where the "V" runs the full length...

    Sheds

I read this at the weekend in the magazine that comes with the Sunday Mail. OK I'm out of the closet as a Mail reader  "What you must try to understand is that every man is an emotional inadequate and we need weird, ritualistic order in our lives. We need space where we can insulate...

    Walking bees

I mowed the grass around the hives yesterday and today I've seen about 20 to 30 bees walking. I guess this might have been happening for weeks but the length of grass was hiding them. They were about 30 feet away from the hives and heading away from the hives. I took note of 2 or 3 with...

    Top bar size for supers

I have National supers and I need some more frames made up. In the past I've always used SN4 (22mm) top bars but rummaging through my kit it looks like I've only got SN5 (28mm) ones left which I use in the 14x12 brood box. Any problems with using SN5 in the super? I'll be using Manley side bars.

    Royal jelly in brood cells

I had a quick look at 2 colonies today which should have newly mated queens in them. They were the queenless halves of artificial swarms. I didn't see any eggs or larvae but some of the cells had what appeared to be royal jelly in the bottom. Is this normal? I didn't see either queen.

    Frame feeder - dozy question

I have frame feeders in my 2 nucs. I've never used them before. I went to re-fill today as they were completely empty and the feeder is full of hungry bees. How do you get the bees out?
