Extracting honey from darkened brood frames

It's frowned upon by many as it is said to taint the taste of the honey being with brood, although I have tasted it and havnt noticed a difference. I wouldn't extract it as it's bad form in my opinion for customers and the bees, if everything is being taken off them and they are fed with...

Another cautionary tale! Always wear your protective gear!

Well after what I said earlier in this posting karma dealt me a blow! Got a nasty sting on the ankle which ballooned up an resulted in mass anti-histamines and hydrocortisone cream. Teach me to not be lazy and put my wellies on to stop the crawlers getting caught in my socks, totally my fault...

    Do swallows eat bees?

Not sure to be honest but I have seen sparrows take mine and wipe the bees like a beecatcher on a tree branch to get out the sting before swallowing. It's a good sight to be honest but they havnt done it much to my knowledge though.

Vita Feed Gold or Fumidal B for Nosema??

No I havnt ruled it out just forgot to put it in there after the poll messed up. If anyone has an opinion on it then I would be more than grateful! Finman - not sure, ideally now but am concerned of another hive next to it and the amount of zig-zagging going on infront of the affected hive...

Beehive on a football cross bar in Brazil

The bees did well to balance a hive on a cross bar, wonder if it was a top bar hive? I'll get my coat. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9473312.stm

    Has anyone extracted honey yet??

In terms of quantities what is enough? Although Ive fed sugar syrup I would rather leave honey on for them as it is obviously going to be a lot better for them. Cheers

Artificial Swarm on Snelgrove, new Queen (?) and mass of Honey

Question 2 answered, I removed the QE and made the hive a BB and a half with the BB full of honey and the super just foundation. The queen wasnt there from what I could see, but there appears to be well enough bees for a swarm not to have happened. Has anyone ever had a newly hatched queen go...

Vita Feed Gold or Fumidal B for Nosema??

I thought Id put a poll on here to help choose which one to go with, but appears to not be working for me. So shall I go with Vita Feed Gold or Fumidal B for Nosema?? Should I be concerned of robbing the syrup by another hive? Thanks!!

    Stores / Surplus Honey Calculation

Is there a rule of thumb for how much honey you leave as stores and how much you take? I assume it is different at different times of the year? Thanks.

    Extraction Steps to Hive

When you extract do you just take the supers off, extract and put them back to have the comb cleaned up by the bees? Or do you swap a full super for a drawn comb super (which I dont have) or foundation super to allow them to carry on in the flow? My concern would be that they go from building...

    Small colony with severe nosema

This is my wild colony which is in a brood box and wont expand beyond 5 frames no matter what. I tested them and nosema is very rife in there so they need treating. What is the best way to treat? Do you think Flumidal B is the right one to use? Shook swarm into a nuc and feed? Then remove all...

Artificial Swarm on Snelgrove, new Queen (?) and mass of Honey

Sorry there are quite a few questions here but I would greatly appreciate some advice. I have done an artificial swarm with a snelgrove board on a very strong colony and have some questions with the brood box with the QC's and the brood box with the old queen in. Brood Box with QC The virgin...

    Hive Attack??? Who?????

I think your damage is from squirrels. I put some brood comb with brood an honey on the bird table, I don't realise there was any honey in it at the time but it appears the squirrels loved both, I had to retrieve comb with very similar damage from next doors shed roof. We have loads of foxes...

    Hive Attack??? Who?????

The cats chase the foxes down my street. If you can't find a cat that "knows Kung Fu"... Why don't you ask ones of those fellas in the big hats outside Buckingham Palace to guard your apiary? You might be able to convince him to have a skep hive in his hat. I'd like to see him keep a...
