    suggestions before petrol!

I have 2 national colonies each with 3 supers, bees working hard.. but they are bees from hell. Far too rude to be acceptable. Can have hundreds on my veil.. Queens not marked sadly, could never find them in the large colony and always too aggressive to look for long. BUT I need to...

    balling queen!

Collected a swarm, and allowed them to walk into box off the ground and from up a lamp post. Slow but steady, until I noticed a cluster of about 20 reluctant to proceed. i gently picked them up and stroked apart. There, in the middle, was the queen that they had apparently balled and...

    Apidea transfer

Hi all, I have a double apidea (brown mating variety)- on 9 little frames, and a lovely queen, safely tucked into a poly Nuc for extra insulation. I welcome suggestions as to transferring them to a National sized Nuc in the Spring. Is wiring all 9 apidea frames onto wooden national frames the...

Hope all you guys out there have registered your hives with bee base so they can be checked too. Only takes one to be anonymous to cause chaos...

    Hive entrance

I bought a hive entrance that had an alighting board, slight canopy and sliding /removable entrance blocks. A complete unit that screwed to the brood box. But cannot remember where I bought it from and a search brings up zilch.. Can anyone recall a supplier of such. Think cost about £15/£20..

    Virtual meetings

Looking forward to our winter meetings for the Division, it looks unlikely that we can meet safely. Thinking of tuition for the members who have just got bees and those still getting their heads around the basics,, what do you suggest we can do from a 'virtual' perspective to help/...

    No new queen cells

I have apideas, each with plenty of bees in. All had good queens so plenty of brood. I have given those mated queens to people with queenless hives, and just assumed that my apideas would have new queen cells within 14 day as brood present was eggs to capped. Looked today... not one queen...

    Can I use a swarm?

I have a few queen cells in the incubator from an excellent hive. Don't want to rinse house bees off their hives to fill my apideas.. So... If I get a swarm could I use those bees to fill the apideas (once I isolate the swarm queen to one). Will they revert to house bee duties in their 3 day...

What are your thoughts on icing sugar dusting to remove varroa. I am concerned about the bees taking up to pollute the honey quality.

    now what

Was given a Nuc top bar, so popped a cast swarm into it, and 4 weeks later it is filling fast, loads of brood and stores. What do I do with it now???

    queen control

I have been told that a number of queen cells in a colony can be controlled not to emerge by the workers. This does seem to be evident as, if I harvest some that are sealed, they can all emerge within a few minutes of being apart from the colony. I have asked experienced ,even Master beekeepers...
