How can I tell if this is supercedure?

I would agree with Tony. They will sort themselves out if she is clipped.

    hive naming/numbering convention

I name the queens accordinng to the lines, or the breeders. for example I have some hivemaker, so his are; P1, P2, P3... etc (his name is peter). Once these are superceded or when I uase them to produce new queens then the new colonies become P1.1.L12.RW,the second 1 indicates that it is the...

"Laying worker or Drone laying Queen?"

That would be fine if it was a drone laying queen and he could find and kill her but this sounds like a laying worker and so he needs to give the brood a chance to take effect. He said that the brood was irratic and over several frames and that really sounds more like a laying worker than a...

"Laying worker or Drone laying Queen?"

It may take tree weeks of adding a brood frame each week to get the workers to stop laying but each time I have done it, I have been able to introduce a new queen in the fourth week. If you try too soon the the laying workers will kill the new queen.

    Brood and a half method

One of the advantages of using this method is that the top box can be removed at any time and allowed to make itself a new queen. The bottom box with flying bees, will continue to produce honey, and you can either use the split as an increase, or a method of producing a new queen for the main...

    Brood and a half method

Place this carefully on top of the upturned roof. Inspect the brood still on the stand, clearing away any brace comb from the top bars. Then lift the rest of the pile back ontop of the first brood very carefully. Now remove the supers in the usual way and inspect the upper brood. Reassemble the...

    Brood and a half method

I use a double brood for a lot of my bees at certain times of year. Currently I have 30 double broods, and 3 on abrood and a half. I dont really like the latter because it is a bit fiddly and has less advantages than the double. Inspection is relatively simple. I start by smoking the door, which...

Epipens, their use and possible dangers

After seeing the size of the needle and the bruise it made, and putting up with the moaning about his sore leg for four days afterwards, I am not sure how easy I would find it to inject myself if I had to. The needle looks like a cannula! Having a partner trained to use it on you is probably a...

Epipens, their use and possible dangers

Well well well, lots of strong opinions as usual! My husband and I both have epipens JUST IN CASE but we were both given them for different reasons. My husband had a severe reaction to some beestings a couple of years ago but it wasnt anaphalaxis, However the GP was concerned that as we still...

    Spraying

I was worried about the fungicide being sprayed in the middle of the day last monday but he didnt actually do it until almost 5pm and i cant see any dead bees today outside the hives.

    Spraying

I have a lot of hives on a local OSR crop and they have only sprayed fungicide recently. It has been too cold here for beetle so they wont be putting an insecticide on this year now. The fungicide shouldnt be a problem if that is all they are spraying. Apparently the insecticides are sprayed...

problem with Hazard labels for turps

I had to see trading standards about how to comply with regs for my product labels (non bee keeping related ones) and they started asking to see polish hazard labels for our polishes. I showed them the t*****s turps hazard labels I had bought (thinking ,of course that they would be fine) but...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I visited my out apiaries to put neopol on all the hives but found to my dismay that a fence had come down in the wind and landed on one of the hives. I opened it up to find it totally empty! Just a few bees on the floor and lots of cappings. That was really bad luck as it was on 7 frames last...

Brood and a half - how should it be done?

[I]the big difference is of course between those who are keeping bees as a hobby and those for whom beekeeping is a hobby. Big difference.[/ Could you possibly clarify... ?

Should tool boxes be a sacred space?

What a good idea. I found my husband using an electrical screwdriver and a lump hammer to put together some push fit metal shelves. The previous time I found him using a screwdriver instead of a chisel, and the time before that he was using a wood chisel when he should have been using a stone...
