    Damson Melomel

I have recently bought Michael Badgers Mead and Honey Wines A Comprehensive guide which is excellent but as I now have damsons I thought I would try his Damson Melomel recipe on page 224. My problem is he talks about adding half a can of red grape concentrate but I don't know what half a can...

    Covenant restricting trade

On Saturday I received a solicitors letter from a neighbour who owns the drive over which I have right of way saying my honey and eggs for sale sign on the road is inviting people to trespass on his drive. They also found out that there is a covenant in my deeds cos it’s grade 2 listed that...

    Apitraz

I have some of this close to sell by date. I won’t use it this year so wondered if it could be kept in the deep freeze and it would still be usable when I need it?

    Dark honey

I have extracted a few supers over the past few days and jarred some today. The honey is very dark and I have never experienced this in Spring - what blossom is likely to have caused that?

    Uncapping.....

I have arthritis in my fingers on both hands and it's becoming quite restrictive now. On Saturday I uncapped 15 supers using the Thornes laser cut uncapping fork. It did the job admirably but it was hell on my fingers. What is the best way of uncapping with the least finger effort if you know...

I have recently bought this book and am working my way through it. I had never heard of the Snelgrove water method but found it quite fascinating. Seems almost too good to be true so my question is have any of you used it and if so with what success?

    Any experience of Lucerne (Alfalfa)

Visited a new apiary site today and the farmer is very keen on all pollinating insects so was only too helpful on where I could site the hives etc. He's sowing lots of Clover and Lucerne this year. I had never heard of Lucerne so did a bit of googling and seems it could be good. Anybody in the...

Virgin queen into existing mini nuc

Having kept bees for many years this is the first time I have attempted to raise queens using mini nucs. I have a couple of mated queens which I will be putting into their permanent homes shortly which will leave the mini nucs queenless. I have some more queens about to hatch and my question is...

    Damn Woodpeckers!

I have 3 hives in one of my apiaries and found today that a woodpecker has pecked large holes in the felt on the roofs of all three. On one it has even gone through the wood underneath. Anyway that aside it seems that metal on my hive roofs is the way forward. Just looked at Thornes and they are...
