    Laying worker?

We have a few beeks up here who use a couple of travelling screens and sit laying worker on top which suppresses the laying workers by allowing brood and queen pheromones through whilst stopping them from fighting and then going on to unite as normal. Saves the grief involved from shaking etc...

    Winter losses 2012/13

Well up here in not so sunny Scotland I have lost two out of five. One I thought was a dead cert to survive winter has dwindled to death and the other was an autumn mating gone wrong. The three survivors are bursting with bees and bias so early queen rearing wont be too far away.

    Natural beekeeping on countryfile

Funniest thing av seen in a while. Would rather look like a toxic waste remover than take a sting near the eye.

    Giving the Q more room

Totally agree. Had a friend who ended up with a brood chamber full of honey and drone and queen cells along bottom. I always place mine below with a frame or two of sealed brood to entice queen down. Have never had a prob.

    Record software

Dont know what your prob is with those online sites. Ive used beetight in the past but grudge the subscription for extra hives so now use hive tracks which has came on leaps and bounds over the past couple of seasons. Even got a slick mobile version (in beta) but working great in the field and...

No use for cell starting this weather

Totally agree with you PH. Weather is dismal and bees are definately not interested in raising queens unless extremely tight for room. Certainly doesnt help when you ask "when did u last inspect? " and the answer is " last year ! ".

good idea to start or not?

Gotta love this one. I've been fooling the wife that I've been breaking even since started beekeping three years ago. Such a fascinating and addictive hobby that my hand has never been out my pocket buying an ever growing stock of boxes, frames, queen rearing kit, timber for making nucs...

Rough atempt at oxalic Vaporization box

Yes you must be right Finman. Taking off lid and whatever crownboard is in place is not disturbing bees. They will not raise their heads to see what you are about to pour on them are they. And i am being naive. Rofl

Rough atempt at oxalic Vaporization box

Had to do it myself just last week and didnt disturb them half as much as what opening them would have done. All polyhives now on modified wooden floors.

Rough atempt at oxalic Vaporization box

If it was me I'd be making a modified floor to sit polyhive on top of. No opening colonies up and disturbing clusters. Vaporising beneath omf floor from the rear of hive makes the job simples !!!!

    Oxalic and Temperatures

Our association owns a varrox vapouriser which I used for the first time this winter. No messing around with liquids and opening up colonies. Seal up entrance and insert beneath mesh floor from behind made this varroa treatment a doddle.

    Who's up / Who's down?????

Came out of winter with one strong stock and two playing catch-up. Experimented with various methods of queen rearing with varying amounts of success/failure and have put seven colonies into winter.

Well im currently in process of watching a poly hive being turned into bean bag filling and i have placed both bait and traps to get the problem under control. Not watching my hard earned cash being shredded by rodents any longer.
