A most blatant act of stupidity.

Actually guys, (Mike included) I think you might be right. I think I am voicing my frustrations at their lack of any support for anything worthwhile. Built them a web site to attract new members. Got moaned at for attracting too many people. Wrote an article on the web site at the request...

Kirklees Council Allotments and the Honey Bee!

Hi Geoff, that is indeed the case. The allotment is clearly marked as being private property and only authorised persons are allowed to enter. Mike, thanks for the heads up on the insurance. I will have a look at it later this week. I am looking for good cover anyway to replace the run of the...

Kirklees Council Allotments and the Honey Bee!

I recently took a small number of my hives to my allotment. This was with the full support of everyone else on the allotment and the site secretary. Being a responsible Apiarist I also erected a 2m high mesh fence around the hives and made sure everything was safe and secure. I engaged all my...

    Bee Type

Yeah, definitely Honey Bees! So many people worry about the strain of the bees that they have and with very little idea of what the differences mean anyway. Sometimes its better just to accept what you have for what they are and hope they do a good job. If they are calm, don't chase people...

    Swarmy Queen?

I don't know if this answering your question but this is an observation I have made over the last few months. In my locality, the weather has being quite mild, and their has been plenty of nectar and pollen coming in from trees. I have seen hives containing new 2009 queens, then proceeding to...

    Today's delivery.

well I had 2 ploy hives delivered today from Modern Beekeeping and I have to say I like what I see. I decided to Epoxy the joints (for my own peace of mind) and they were still up and complete in around 10 minutes each. It took me longer to assemble the frames for the hives! By the time you...

    Queenless hive just swarmed.

Hi Jon, we had this same problem with a hive 4 weeks ago. No more sealed cells in a swarmed hive, and a 2nd queen hatched and legged it into the hive. I said it exactly the same, leave them to it and the queens will fight it out and the winner will take over the hive. 2 days later a cast...

    Queenless hive just swarmed.

You need to find that new queen and get her into an apidea with some nurse bees. If you don't they will probably throw a cast swarm and she will be on her way. You might also want to leave a nuc with some drawn comb, or foundation nearby to catch any swarms that might try and leave.

    Colony swarmed twice!!!!

I had a similar problem. I hived the swarm in a brood chamber and left them 24 hours. I went through the old hive and removed 3 queen cells (put them in mating apideas with some nurse bees). I went through the hive to try and find a queen. None was found, but if she had of been I would...

    leather glove cleaning

I trained as a Post Mortem Technician in our local hospital. Because of the risk of infection or injury from sharps we wore 2 pairs of latex gloves for safety. One pair tucked under the cuff of our over suits, and one pair running over the top. With my bees I do the same. One pair tucked...
