    No queen cells!

They were only just starting to charge cells, not capped queen cells, and in your own “sticky” on demaree you say this is the time to carry out the demaree.

    No queen cells!

I think that highly unlikely as the demaree was carried out at the very first sign that they were starting to charge cells. There had been no capped queen cells.

    No queen cells!

Carried out a demaree on a hive a week ago as there were charged queen cells in the brood box. Inspected the top box today expecting to find lots of queen cells as there was lots of very young brood and eggs when we moved them to the top and there was not one! This seemed very strange to me as...

    Swarm keeps trying to swarm

A week ago we had a call out to retrieve a large prime swarm. We housed it in a six frame nuc, and closed the entrance disc so that the bees can come and go but the queen can't get out. It is is an out apiary. We fed after 3 days. However, it would appear that they are still trying to swarm...

    Bee Wagon recommendations

Land Rover Defender 90 Pick up. We originally tried towing a trailer on the car but the equipment just bounced around too much.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Went an hour before sunset, when all the bees were back in for the night to find the queen in a 6 frame nuc and place her on a frame of brood in the observation panel of an observation nuc ready for a bee event tomorrow. Lo and behold, no matter how many times we went through we could not find...

How many hives hits the "sweet-spot"?

We have 13 spread over 3 apiary sites. Retirement means that we have the time to deal with them but at times I feel that they are taking over our lives, and that is before we start extracting, jarring and selling the honey locally!!

    Dearth of nectar

Everything just seems to have taken off in the past week and we are now down to our last four spare supers, which will probably be put onto hives tomorrow. Will have to resort to brood boxes and ladders if they don't get a move on and start capping so that we can extract.

    New queen - whats happening?

I would say that she is not well mated and you should replace her.

    Bees and pigeons

When we had our hives in the garden the bees used to chase the pigeons away.

    Simple question about swarms

A very simple question. Will a swarm, no matter how small, march into a nuc if there is no queen present?

    Colonies just ticking over

With all the second homes here I think there is very little risk of inbreeding!!!

    Colonies just ticking over

We have 11 colonies in 3 different apiaries. This year they just seem to be ticking over with no real expansion. The queens are all either 2021 or this year’s, and every colony seems to be building supercedure cells which they cap and never hatch. They are bringing some nectar back, but not...

When to hive an extremely large swarm?

Collected an extremely large swarm in a six frame nuc today. How long before they can be transferred into a brood box as I am concerned they might abscond because they are so crowded?

    Honey buyers scarce

Have not been able to take off a spring crop yet but the customers are queueing up to buy it as soon as we have any!!

    Bees and helicopters!

A number of years ago we were carrying out a hive inspection and the bees were very calm on the frames. Suddenly the tone of the buzzing changed, and the bees started running around the frames frantically and started coming out of the hive and attacking us. We could not work out what had upset...

    Mouldy and brittle wax

Sorry if this has been asked before but how can you avoid stored empty super frames becoming very brittle and the few bits of pollen left going mouldy? The supers are stacked and stored outside over the winter, on an open mesh floor with a roof on top.
