    Moving a WBC

Hello I need to move a split into a WBC and so need to move it over to an out apiary and back again a while later. Would it be easier to make a temporary floor and roof for this job rather than taking the whole hive which will not strap up easily?

    Building a Masie's WBC

Am going to start with the Brood box (5 to make) and was considering screwing it together to make it a bit stronger. Notice with the Masies design that they only have one piece of wood as the bottom rail (square cross section) so that there is not 6mm gap at the bottom? Or have I got this...

    WBC tunnel dimensions

Can someone let me have the dimensions of the piece of wood that forms the roof of the entrance tunnel in a WBC? It is the bit behind the porch lift that butts up aginst the bottom of the brood box and stops the bees going up into the lifts. Thank you.

What to do with ivy honey

We got a good crop of ivy honey this year which has set solid in the foundation. Question is what to do with it? Can I strip it from the foundation, dilute it a little and then feed it back to the bees or will it just set solid again? Could I use some of it as cut comb for us to use? Other...

    Bees build their own entrance

I have left the entrance block off my hive this summer as it was so hot but when I looked inside the entrance yesterday, I could see what appeared to be a mouseguard. When I looked closer I could see it was actually a screen of propolis with lots of bee sized entrance holes through it that they...

    Beehive energy budget

Taking Jurgen Tautz's book "The Buzz About Bees", I thought I would use some of his facts and figures to work out an energy budget for a bee colony.:cheers2: Queen lays 200,000 eggs a year which gives a population of around 50,000 in the summer and 20,000 in the winter. 1 bee collects 30 mg...

    Arnia Hive Monitor

Got my copy of BKKA News and there is a piece there about a new hive monitoring system called Arnia. It is a mobile phonne sized box that monitors bee sounds and then sends the data back via a wireless link to a central databases and the beekeeper is then given the results by text or email...
