    Exhibition quality honey jars

I'm thinking of putting some honey into our local shows for the first time. Can anyone recommend a supplier of 1lb jars that are high enough quality to exhibit honey in? Every one in a gross I ordered from one supplier have mottling and marks from the glass moulds. Thanks in anticipation.

Horsley or Basterfield for artificial swarms?

Because I have limited space in my home apiary I am experimenting with two types of vertical artificial swarm this year. One uses a board devised by Ken Basterfield and a technique described in Bee Craft in April 2012. He splits the brood in two and leaves half with the queen which is deprived...

Why are my queens a different colour from their worker sisters?

I've been raising my own queens for the first time this year, following a 2 queen system recommended by Ron Brown in one of his booklets. Essentially it's a form of artificial swarm forcing the remaining bees to raise emergency cells. So far so good but the queens are a completely different...

The comb around them was warm and soft when I inspected yesterday and I don't want to damage the cells. Thanks...

    Moving clustered bees

Hi again. After starting a controversy with a query about a 2 queen system, and getting some excellent advice and opinions I'd like to have another go. I need to move a hive in my garden apiary about 20 feet to start the new season. It's in an inconvenient position because of various short...

    Two queen system

I've been reading a booklet by Ron Brown entitled 'A simple two queen system'. It was written in about 1980. I am thinking of using it on one of my hives next year and wondered if anyone has used his system and whether there were any drawbacks.

    Nuc into 14x12- preferred way.

I will shortly be getting a five frame nuc on National brood frames which I want to move straight away into a 14x12 broodbox. Should I start by adding a 14x12 frame at the centre or the ends of the nuc frames?

    Will a DLQ get mated?

The cast I hived two weeks ago has a drone laying queen. Now that she's laying will she try and get mated if the weather improves or am I better off removing her and trying to get queen cells developed from a frame of eggs?
