    Hives in gardens

Blimey... nevermind the Bee's, i'd be really ticked off if my neighbour was in and out of my garden all summer.

    Mead and duty

It's quite clear in the opening section of the Customs document that your still liable regardless of whether your only charging for the bottle. "1.1 What is this notice about? This notice explains the United Kingdom’s (UK) requirements for the duty stamping of retail containers of spirits...

    Honey £16 per lb

I'm guessing they mean the River Lynher, an Emmet perhaps....

    Today's mystery hive

That wouldn't be so bad... it would just be a standard hive with no queen excluder.

    Today's mystery hive

I wonder whether the Bee Inspector would agree with that sentiment?

No prizes for guessing how they cleared their bee's off the super frames??

    Shipping from USA

Hi... just an observation, but i can't for the life of me work out why you'd want to buy a national hive ( which is UK oddity ) and ship to the US... Langstroth hives are pretty much a world standard. What would you do when you needed extra equipment in a hurry for example...

    Bee sting experiences

No hard and fast rules, it depends on many factors i think, i've taken a single blow to the thigh and my whole leg went red and patchy for days and just wouldn't stop itching. Equally, the other evening when I was going through one of my nasty hives ( re-queening ), i took three in the same arm...

    Global (s)warming?

Looks to me like swarming in July has been known before: It being a Proverb, that a Swarm of Bees in May is worth a Cow and a Bottle [bundle] of Hay, whereas a Swarm in July is not worth a Fly. [1655 S. Hartlib Reformed Commonwealth of Bees 26]

    Killer Wasps!

That'll be wasps. Wasp larvae are carnivorous and secrete a sugary substance that the adult wasps eat - they're feeding your bee's to their larvae. As the year moves on there are less larvae and they'll be after the honey in your hives instead.

    Italian Bees...Dislike :(

Also... you state you have poorly defended mini-nucs laden with foundant, anything could be robbing them, your logic that it's italian bee's on the basis that you "suppose" them to be adept robbers seems a litte skewed.

    Italian Bees...Dislike :(

If they were robbing i'd have thought you'd have seen fighting and dead bees.

    Left overs after extracting

Wouldn't that encourage robbing? I use hot and cold water for the extractor, and the buckets go in the dishwasher.

Does anyone know what a manley cage is and how I can make one?

I've never head of those, perhaps your confusing it with manley frames? Here is a site that lists common types of cages http://website.lineone.net/~dave.cushman/queencages.html Most of the major beekeeping shops online sell cages of one sort or another.

    What Bees to Keep?

If you go to the LKBA website now, they have two taster days planned - one for today ( 2nd July ) and one for 6th August, pop along and take a look.

    What Bees to Keep?

Your best bet would be to start by contacting the Lincolnshire Beekeepers association and getting some "Bee" time and start reading some books - the Association have a recommended reading list as well. Once you've started down that route, the variation in Bee "Types" will make a lot more sense.

found a sad hive next door!!!!

The NBU issues guidance on Abandoned Hives: http://www.*************/files/library/abandoned_hives_1306906293.pdf This is clearly isn't abandoned as it's on somebody else's property! You might not like the sight of the car the neighbour has left un-used on their drive for the past ten...
