    The stresses of beekeeping

Last year was the first year we have our bees (I did the course a few years back but we were renting at the time and then moved so we gave it a miss for a bit), they were strong going into winter. Then you start to worry over the winter period (well I did), if they would survive and why is...

    Bee stings versus wasp stings

I can't remember which way they go but one is alkaline and one is acidic. I got stung by a wasp when I was a kid and I didn't have any real reaction. I have been stung 4 times by bees. The first time on my face, just under my eye (after removing my veil and a good distance from any hives) and...

    Bit of Rain Helps.

One of my hives was still active gone 9.30 last night and they were bringing in a dark grey pollen (any ideas?). The others were tucked up in bed at 9. The only reason I know this as I was waiting till late evening to mow the lawns around them. They didn't seem too bothered by my presence...

    Cluster under the hive

This happened to my hive. it helps if you give them an alighting board and also make sure the entrance block is out. I didn't have either at the time and I think the girls got fed up of queuing at the door and could smell the hive from underneath. I could see them passing food etc through...

    Drones getting the boot

Our drones have been given the heave-how last weekend, it was sad to see them being kicked out and left to die on the path leading away from the front of the hive. RIP Mr Drones I live just outside Llanelli, South Wales

Which Areas Are Still Getting Pollen?

My girls are still bringing in loads of pollen - mainly bright orange and a bold yellow. I have quite a few ghostly white bees coming back from the H balsalm. I have had 1 or 2 coming in with green pollen. I live right on an estuary with farm land around me (full of animal feed/maize) so I...

2010 Nuc prices (bought or sold)

I gave a donatation to the charity of the "sellers" choice as they did not want anything for the Nuc but I felt bad not giving anything so I asked which charity they would want me to give money to in their name.

    Fresh from the doctors....

Piriton is the brand name and Chlorphenamine is the generic drug name. Piriton is manufactured by GSK Consumer Healthcare. If you did sustain a sting what dose should you take - 1 or 2 tablets? Also, what is the best anti-histamine cream to use? Thanks
