    Attracted to salt?

At our association meeting yesterday, one of our experienced members stated that bees could be 'trained' to a water source by adding salt to the water. This is new to me. Any comments? True or balderdash?

artificial swarm, brood or no brood?

Went to a talk yesterday by a fourth generation beekeeper with 50 colonies. He said something that really hadn't occured to me before. That is, when doing an artificial swarm, put the 'swarmy' queen in a box with stores but no brood. His logic is that when they swarm in the wild they don't take...

    Ladybirds

I don't know if it is just this area, but there seems to be massive amounts of ladybirds around this year.

    was this the right advise??

Got a call from a friend and new beekeeper last night. He has five colonies, one of which is a swarm he was given last year. He checked yesterday and the day before and found- two frames relatively full of brood, uncapped larvae, no eggs, no queen seen, five queen cells, one capped. Given the...

    What would you do next?

Please bear with lengthy explanation. I have one colony that overwintered on National brood and a half. Took advantage of glorious weather for forst inspection of the season. The super is crammed with capped stores, every frame full, probably a combination of last years Balsam and syrup (plus...

    post osr mayhem? advice please

For the first time ever I'm going to have OSR within foraging distance this year, about 125 acres of it right on my doorstep. By the looks of it, it will be in flower at the end of this week, if this weather persists. Colonies are strong atm but being fed with 1:1 syrup as not much nectar about...

    Treating cedar

My tractor barn is three years old and built of cedar planking. Is there anything I could/should treat it with to extend its life?? I don't want to change the appearance too much (planning regs)

    Pollen Patties

I'm about to feed my colonies with pollen patties. My thought process (which may well be flawed, so fire away) is that the bees are foraging early this year. They are bringing in pollen, so there may well be brood to be fed. But there is not going to be masses of pollen around, and the loads the...

    Queen Rearing

    Poly HIve First timer

I've been using cedar Nationals for about five years. I've decided to try out a poly national, just out of interest really. Is there anything I should watch out for? anything I should do differently?

    Good swarm catching video?

Can anyone point me to a video that shows the full process, from catching to putting in a hive? Most of the ones I have found only show part of the process.

    Overcrowded? please advise

This afternoon at 2 I put a clearing board on my WBC below two honey supers and above a single brood box. Late in the year for many, but we have had a decent balsam flow for the last three weeks. Supers are pretty full. Just been down to hive (8.15 pm) and there are lots of bees clustered...

two queens and an aborted swarm

A fellow beekeeper asked for my advise and I'm frankly stumped. Two months ago he was given a swarm which he hived. Three weeks ago there were two sealed queen cells and no new brood. He kept the queen cells intact. Last week they swarmed, just a cast (about the size of a coconut he said). They...

    Finding the Balsam

A friend and I both have hives almost exactly equidistant from the same stand of balsam (about 1 Km). As far as we can ascertain its the only balsam in the area. He is due East of it and I am due North. His bees found the balsam a full two weeks before mine. is it - Bad luck on my part? My bees...
