    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

Im not reusing any infected frames. Everything was burnt from those hives. I’m cleaning everything and starting again. Just to be on the safe side. All my brood frames are being burnt. But the cost of replacing every piece of equipment. Especially the supers would be to much.

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

I’m not mixing it together the plan is. For poly: I have two tanks the first with sodium hypochlorite. Then the second with washing soda. Then I’ll rinse with a hose. For wood; I need to wash around 30 supers worth of wax frames. I’ll steam the frames, recover the wax. Then burco boiler with...

For Soda Crystals NBU recommends 1:5. Is that 30kgs in 150l?

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

Just to be clear, for 150l of water I need 30l of 15% sodium hypochlorite. I need to do around 15 nucs 6 poly supers and 2 complete poly hives. All my qe are plastic and I’ve insulated crown boards. Which also require washing. It maybe more cost effective in future to use caustic soda.

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

The one I’ve purchased comes in 5l tubs. It’s £32 for 20l. If I need 30l of the stuff, it’s getting expensive! I’ve cleaned boxes before with caustic soda. Which is far cheaper but needs heating. An added cost as I don’t have gas ring. I do have a barrel I can heat. I’m trying to avoid boiling...

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

The part i am unclear about is the nbu recommendation is 3% sodium hypochlorite. The product is 15%. So how much product do I need in a 150l tank. And how many hives will it do before I need to change the solution?

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

Thank you Wilco, NBU do advise on dipping with Sodium Hypochlorite. I have a 150l tank, in Laurence’s video. The poly hives come out like new.

    Cleaning Poly hives after Efb

So, I’ve had a Efb outbreak in one apiary. I have killed the bees and burnt and buried and the contaminated hives. I am now scorching all wooden hive parts. But I have a number of plastic and poly nucs and full sized hives. That still need cleaning. These hive had Efb, so I really like to...

    EFB West Norfolk

I have not tested the frames as I do not have a test. Been told to save two frames. For the bee inspector to test on Tuesday. The rest were burnt this morning. Never had EFB, so it’s all very new.

    EFB West Norfolk

Found suspected EFB in one of my hives yesterday. Bee inspector is coming on Tuesday to check my colony’s. Suspect hive was destroyed last night and I’ve saved two frames for testing by the BI. Hive was strong across 11 frames. Only found two frames which didn’t look right. Hopefully caught it...

    Beekeeping talk

I have been asked to do a beekeeping talk on Wednesday. The children will be primary school from 5-11. I am wanting some printable posters as I cannot get an observation hive in time. Does anyone have a sauce of downloads they can kindly point me to so I can print them off at home?
