    Uniting a Q- angry hive

Yes, QCs were made. I checked about 9 days after introduction, found the bees to be calm and an unmarked queen in there, but also recently sealed qcs. I marked the queen, who I assumed was the introduced queen who's disc had fallen or been chewed off, and destroyed the QCs. Now 11 days later no...

    Uniting a Q- angry hive

I have a Q- angry hive. I removed the queen a couple of weeks ago, and introduced a bought-in queen. The introduction failed, and the hive is now queenless, empty of brood, and nastier than ever. I added a test frame today just to check they really are queenless, and if the test frame confirms...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I was there too. Wasn't it brilliant? Mind you, after an hour in a biosecure room with frames of EFB and AFB, I came home, put all my clothes in the wash and had a long shower.

    2-queen set up for nucs

Thank you Michael; very useful advice. I shall wait for the queen before I set up the double system.

    2-queen set up for nucs

I have 2 nucs which are going well and bringing in a load of nectar, and both need a super. I was planning to set up a shared super for them, like Mike Palmer's system where the 2 nucs access a joint super, each through their own queen excluder. This is partly because I dont have enough nuc...

    Advice please - winter losses

Laid by drone -laying workers? And if its DLWs, would you expect to see charged queen cells? Doesn't a DLW hive think its queenright ?

    Advice please - winter losses

Good regular pattern. One egg per cell.

    Advice please - winter losses

Can I please ask a follow-on question? Following excellent advice on this forum, back in April I split an angry production colony into two splits in nucs (each supplied with a mated Buckie queen), leaving the parent colony to requeen from a donated frame of eggs. One of the Buckies has taken...

What's flowering as forage in your area

I think we are in the June gap already here in N somerset. Hives are losing weight, the sycamore and chestnut are finished, hawthorne is going over, and white clover only just appearing.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Blackberry-like flowers here in NE Somerset, but these are on Dewberry rather than your actual Blackberry

    Advice please - winter losses

Some feedback on requeening a nasty double-brood colony After following advice above from Jeff and JBM I caged the nasty queen under a push in cage in the bottom brood box, and split the upper box into two smaller colonies, each of which received a mated queen from BMH. Then a week after that...

Thanks very much Jeff and JBM; I shall do just that.

    Advice please - winter losses

I have exactly the same issue as Greandog - winter losses resulting in only 2 healthy double-brood colonies; one headed by a lovely prolific calm queen and the other by a psychopath (they were nasty going into winter, but have come out under a new unmarked queen who is even worse). I had a long...

Where do forum members (those who buy their queens) buy their queens from?

I bought a Jolanta queen from BMH late in 2022 - very gentle, overwintered well and built up strongly in Spring 23, but disappeared (presumed swarmed) in April. Her daughter (Queen Mary) is currently my best queen; gentle, calm, built up quickly, didn't show signs of swarming, and delivered...

    My set-up at end August

The welcome note suggested I share my set-up, so please find attached! There are 3 main colonies in double brood Swienty hives and 3 nucs in various combinations. All have feeders on at the moment. The one on the bench at the end was a late surprise; I will find a better stand before the...

    Hello from me

Long-time lurker, decided to join up. I am Nick, from N E Somerset, and this is my 3rd year with bees. I am a member of the Bath Association, and passed my Basic this year. Still very much a learner, and hoping to pick a few brains along the way! Hi everyone
