    Bee paradise

Hi guys I am at the moment in southern Spain it's about 27c and the Orange/Lemon trees are just starting to blossom, the smell is intoxicating. There are honey bees on the flowers but with so many trees and flowers they got to be literally busy bees :) I suspect you bees would love a holiday...

Would anyone be interested in a ‘bee share’?

My situation has changed and I am getting less and less time to tend to my bees. Ideally I don’t want to sell so I was thinking that if someone would like to ‘take them over’ and look after them at my allotment and we could split any honey collected. The benefits for the sharer would be no...

My bees are collecting like crazy.

One of my hives is on scales so while the weather has been good the bees have been collecting 3ks a day :) I was watching them at lunchtime and about ¾ of the bees were bringing in pollen – so the other ¼ have either done really with the nectar or the bees changed tack and started bringing in...

    Nuc question

Just had a look at a nuc (p*ynes 14x12) and it is full – all 6 frames are full with bias and stores but no Q cells – what would be the best course of action. There is a big flow on at the moment but the weather is set for not so good next week so would you take a chance and leave them, put them...

    Holland & Barrett

Went to Holland & Barrett to get some Lecithin Granules for Hivemakers recipe and the assistant was rattling on about the virtues of the product so I explained what I wanted it for so she said you have local honey we are always being asked for local honey would you like to come back and speak to...

    My ‘perfect storm’

Just to let you know about my worst experience whilst beekeeping. About a month ago I went down to the allotments and noticed that one of my hives had been knocked over (almost certainly by a badger). I didn’t have my beekeeping gear with me so quickly went home to get it. I suited up and went...

    Very busy bees

I inspected my bees on 28th August as we were going away for a week and as one of the hives had a nearly full super I added an undrawn national brood box as that’s all I had left – just inspected today (12 days) and they have drawn all 11 of the frames and filled 9 with honey with the other 2...

    Is this label legal?

Just seen this in the coop – it has an image of cut comb on the jar but it's not cut comb honey.

    Pest controllers

My wife has just spoken to an old friend who told her that she has had a pest controller come to her house to sort out some ‘bees’. They were in a bird box – so probably bumble bees. He put insecticide in the box and then put it in her dustbin, and then charged her £200. Any thoughts?

    New addition to the apiary.

I have just acquired these scales and set them up in my apiary. I am going to put just one hive on them and weigh it at every inspection to add to my hive record. It’s going to be interesting when we get a flow on :)

    Queen question

Following on from the queen handling question - has anyone on here ever been stung by a queen?

How much do you pay for your allotments?

As the title says really. We pay £70 a year for ours with no restrictions, we can keep bees, hens and horses if we want with no problems only down side is that we have no water supply - except a river that runs at the bottom :) Ours are private but the council ones further down from us are £170...

    Questions for swarm catchers

Of those of you that have caught a few swarms that weren’t your own – how many marked queens do you get as a ratio to the number of swarms and what colour do you mark them if you mark them?

    Balsam starting to flower

Had a look at the back of our allotment near the river today and the Balsam is starting to flower – may be hope for some honey this year :)

    Swarm no.2

When I got to my apiary this swarm greeted me. This swarm was mine :blush5: and it was very difficult, as you can see it was reasonably high up in a ‘Christmas tree’. I had to cut away a few branches to get to it and even from the top of the ladder it was only just in reach. The first attempt I...

    Swarm

This swarm wasn’t as difficult as it looks from the photo as it was in a small oak tree half way up a hill – so it was just a matter of cutting a few branches out of the way to get to the one that they were on and then tapping them into a box. We have a wild colony high up in an old asbestos...

Great Tits feeding their young on my bees.

Noticed today that a great tit was feeding It’s young on my bees – it was landing at the back of the hive and taking the bees from either the floor under the hive or a couple of times from the mesh. I presume that the ones it was getting from the mesh were alive but I couldn’t see if it was...
