Many going to the National Honey Show?

Not yours, but the Isle of Man Honey Show, my first as Secretary and exhibitor and didn’t do badly at either. Came away with firsts in the Light honey, Novice liquid honey and biggest surprise, in the wax block: second in the moulded candles and presentation of 12 jars for sale, fourth and very...

    Air source heat pumps

We built a new house three years ago, so different to older houses but installed an ASHP with underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs. The house is insulated to death (I did most of it complete with hazmat suit, swimming goggles and breathing mask) and we have room sensitive controllers...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I can now die happy: I have made a dovetail joint! All hand sawn so not neat or tidy but strong and fit for purpose, also made a trug out of pallets. I think I am becoming obsessed with woodwork tho 😳

Happy New year fellow beekeepers. What are your aspirations?

I’m hoping my four colonies will still be alive and well after the winter (they are all still showing signs of activity so far) then when it’s warm enough I’m going to try and mark my queens in anticipation of a Bailey Comb Change (for my nuc that are on standard national frames in a 14x12 with...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I decided to do something with the pallets that have been sitting in our “garden” for a couple of years and made two hive stands. Not bad for my limited woodworking skills (got a circular/skill saw for Christmas and snapped up a £49 DeWalt hammer driver in the pre Christmas sale) and amazingly...

    November activity 😳

Noooooooo! White and gold. How weird! https://www.optimax.co.uk/blog/blue-black-white-gold-dress/#:~:text=After%20much%20investigation%20and%20disagreement,our%20perception%20of%20its%20colour%E2%80%9D.

    Dummy Boards

I made some wider ones this year and put some Kingspan inside for a nuc I’ve put into a big hive and will only take up half of it to keep them warmer over winter. I had some spare ply. If I had to buy some I might not have!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thank you! I made insulated ekes to go on the crown boards last year with a fondant feeder compartment and both colonies which were quite small, made it through the winter OK. Fingers crossed for this winter too 😁

What did you do in the Apiary today?

My first honey harvest! Well chuffed with my girls. I’ve kept just under half to feed back as I feel I’ve cheated them by putting on a super each when they were still building up the brood (it was too cold to fully inspect in April so I erred on the side of caution and gave them space so they...

    Who makes their own foundation?

Sorry if I’m asking questions that have already been discussed. I did look and couldn’t see anything that answered my questions. The info that’s been provided is really helpful so thanks for taking the time to respond.

    Who makes their own foundation?

Great ideas, thank you! I started one of the hives with standard frames in the 14x12 and they neatly built up the bottom part so the standard foundation sheet with them filling in the rest may well work. I’ll have a go at all of the suggestions and keep you posted!

    Who makes their own foundation?

Thank you. I thought I must be searching with the wrong words but it seems like I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist!

    Who makes their own foundation?

Sorry, I meant foundation template sheets to make your own. Not actual foundation.

    Who makes their own foundation?

Does anyone know where to get foundation sheets for 14 x 12 frames? All the ones I’m finding are too small to make those. Ta.

    Thank you- great advice.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Ooooh, extracted my first honey yesterday. Very exciting! Only two supers, not all frames used and those used (my theory was to get them off (I have 14x12s) and if too watery would feed back) only partly filled but all capped or shake-test-successful and all came out beautifully and less than...

    Queen staying beneath hive

I had the same problem last year with the queen returning from her mating flight and undershot and gathered a small crowd under the mesh floor but I brushed her and her entourage into a bucket and encouraged them back in and put a large bathroom tile propped up underneath the entrance and have...

    Online shopping

Yes, very lucky we don’t have that yet 🤞 interestingly though, as we don’t have that, we do get braula which I think you don’t have too much of as it’s eradicated when you treat for varroa. We had some inspectors over administering the basic bee assessment and were amazed to see one when we went...
