Best Late Summer/Autumn shrub for bees

I have a large St Johns Wort in my garden that flowered in the summer is in full bloom again. Disapointingly I only see a few hover flies and the occasional bumble bee visiting it. I am going to dig it up in spring and put it on Freegle, so I can put in perennials that are more beneficial to...

    Plastic Foundation

Watched a recent video this week from BMH, Lawrence sprayed his plastic foundation with a home-made propolis tincture with good results. ⚗️ Has anyone else heard of this or tried this method? Incidentally if you break plastic foundation can you fix it with super glue or Airfix glue?:)

What is the recommended space above a frame in a National hive - bottom bee space.

That sounds like a good 'No Nonsense' answer. If it rots - I can just replace it. I'll ask my neighbour to cut four pieces from the same pallet wood that I used for the UE. Thanks again for your advice. Regards, Ron.

What is the recommended space above a frame in a National hive - bottom bee space.

Thanks everyone, I was becoming sidetracked on this! I have spent a couple of months dwelling on this and kept coming back to it. Should have asked the question on here way back then! My other quandry is that now that a frame is in situ, the bottom of the frame almost touches my 'No Nonsense'...

What is the recommended space above a frame in a National hive - bottom bee space.

I have been looking at National Hive plans and diagrams with all the measurements, except one. Assuming bottom bee space, how much space to allow above a frame to the top edge of the box? I watched a video where someone mentioned 1/16", another said 1/8" and a diagram that showed it as 11/16"...

    Sold 2 x 6 frame nucs WN5 (Wigan)

Hi, I am a new non-beekeeping member who has set a five frame (National) bait box/hive in my garden in Appley Bridge. There has been three swarms very close to where I live in early June and I had a few scout bees, but it was extremely windy. My box has one frame of plastic foundation and the...

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

Is there a 'recommended' quarantine period for captured swarms that would allow any infections, or bad traits to be sorted out? This must come with experience and I had not given this much thought when making my swarm trap! Is a collected swarm a gift or a curse for the beekeeper? This...

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

Interesting situation then! I suppose it pays to have a good number of understanding friends and relatives with large gardens? Thanks.

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

That is a very good bio-security point. Do most non-commercial beekeepers have access to a quarantine apiary? With all my good intentions of having set up a swarm trap and expecting a local beekeeper to take them off my hands, am I not asking/pressuring them to take in a possible dodgy swarm?

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

Thanks for the reply - always wondered if commercial beekepers used a block of swarm traps!

Any scouts at your swarm trap?

As a very curious outsider, is it not possible that a large swarm of 10,000+ bees could contain a number of queens? Would they all migrate to one box, or would different scout bees attract a preferred individual queen to their selected box? I have watched the YouTube videos were the beekeeper...

    Hi From Wonderful Wigan!

I am not a beekeeper and I have no intention of becoming a beekeeper! Like many other people I am and always have been fascinated by all types of bees. I enjoy the YouTube videos of JP the beeman, 628 dirt rooster etc. I also like Laurence Edwards 'No Nonsense Beekeeping' and other UK beekeepers...
