    Complete dead out !

I have two hives about three feet apart. I treat for Varroa. They have insulation around the hive Both colonies survived up until now. Just checked them. Both have fondant on them One is very busy right now. The other colony that seemed to be ok a week or so ago is now completely dead. All...

    Oxalic vaping now.

The weather has somewhat disrupted my Oxalic vaping. Did the second lot 3 days ago, another tomorrow. I have two hives at the moment about three feet apart. One colony, now into it's third year has almost no Varroa drop at all. My second colony that I had as a swarm last year , has such a...

    Telegraph harumph pshaaw. Adulterers

I see in the 'news' that UK 'honey producers' are up in arms about the fact that new EU regs will demand a full list of all the gak they put in their 'honey'. I am outraged that those bloody foreigners want to know the exact percentage of crap I put in my honey. I did not vote to leave the EU...

    Oxalic pan vape

Advice needed from the hive mind please. I have read some posts about people using car charger /jump start/power pack devices to power their Oxalic vape pans rather than carting a 12 volt battery around. I like the idea of not so much weight ! Saw something in Halfords with an air compressor...

Winter stores (or lack of ).

Hi Beeps, second year of keeping Bees. Now have two colonies , one has a lazy queen who I tried to replace and failed earlier on in the year. The newest colony has a good queen. However neither have much in the way of stores right now. Only one has a full brood frame of honey at the moment. Been...

    Spring Mite treatment.

Just transferred a small colony into a nuc. They were trearted with Apiguard in the autumn and vaped with Oxalic at the end/start of the year. Should I be thinking of any treatment now ?

    50/50 chance of survival

Just had a guy come round to help me adress what I thought was a honeybound hive. Turns out the stores are fine it's the size of the colony that's the problem. I seem to have a new queen who overwintered without having to lay much. Too many drone cells and multiple eggs in cells. There is worker...

    Ivy honey.

Now in my second year of having Bees. Did first inspection of the year today. Saw the Queen. Have brood in all stages about 50 drone cells, that's normal for this time of year ? Brood on 3 frames. I have a couple of frames of what I think is ivy honey , it is very dark. Will the Bees use this as...

    Oxalic vaping.

First year as a beekeeper. So still finding my feet as it were. I used Apiguard in the Autumn and it seemed to get rid of a lot of mites. Just done my third Oxalic vape and checking the board the drop seems minimal, only a few dead ones. Assuming there is no brood in there, can the colony be...

Super over wintered under brood box

I was advised to put a super with some honey under the brood box for the winter. When is the best time to remove and put on top. Not sure I want Brood and a half.

    Dead winter Bees

Hi peeps, end of my first year of Beekeeping. Got a half filled super under the brood box and have made a 25mm celotex insulation 'cosy'. Have some fondant for later on and the Vapmite is on it's way. What is the 'acceptable' daily loss of Bees this time of year, seem to have about 20/40 dead...

    Turning hive around.

My hive is at the end of my veg garden and faces east across open fields. In the winter it get's the full North/East wind and I am thinking it may be good to turn the base around so that it is more sheltered from the wind. Is this something to be concerned about ?

    NOOBEE QUEEN PROBLEM?

I have noticed a drop off in egg laying in my hive. Couple of frames have a lot of brood and larvae. Seven frames of honey and some pollen. Just seems to be a drop off in the laying rate. Also seeing what look like supersedure cells. The bees are VERY calm and still bringing in pollen. Have not...

    I dunno.......

Was given a swarm a few weeks ago, it's now in my new hive. Was told it was probably an unmated queen. Have resisted the overwhelming urge look inside since denucing them, given them some light syrup in a rapid feeder as the weather has been pretty crap. They have been taking the syrup, may have...

    Feeding ?

Was given a swarm on Monday 9th May. Four frames and a probably unmated Queen. They would appear to be healthy and drawing comb well but no idea what they have in the way of stores. It's really crap weather right now and they are not flying. Is it a good idea to give them some feed right now, if...

    Home made hives.

Thinking of making my own hives to help keep the cost down. Looking at plywood, 18 or 25mm and what grade exterior or marine? Been researching it and WBP exterior ply seems to be the choice of some. Confused as to what 'class' the ply ought to be, is this to do with the glue used in manufacture...
