    Overheating

Cotton sucks the heat out of you, particularly when wet. I believe this is maybe one reason why many bikers wear denim waistcoats over their leathers in the USA at least, water barrels outside bars to dunk the vest in before riding into the heat? Anyhow, wet cotton clothes, redampened if...

    Upping the ante

I recently discovered that although something like 60% of us is water by mass, the proportion based on molecule count is 99% water. 1% of the remaining molecules hold all that liquid in, make the tea, argue on forums etc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_of_the_human_body

    Upping the ante

I agree with your principles, but are you in Kent or are you where native Americans grew the three sisters? Aiming for what was grown in a totally different climate seems a bit contradictory to the rest of your ideas? Mirror the principle but with things that suit your climate, rainfall, soil...

    Upping the ante

Joy Larkcom's Grow Your Own Vegetables is I think essential. How to for each veg and a planning guide. We have an area of grazing untouched probably for 50 years which is hard to get rid of the grass, reeds and moss. Digging it up just exposes all the seeds buried and lying in wait! Asking for...

    Poly vs wood

Surely only the drones sweat? ;)

Double Brood Box or Brood Box & Super?

Can I ask if once you get to several brood boxes is that something that will shrink back over winter annually or all being well that hive stays that big? As said above, as someone with no bees yet, hives sold as one brood two supers made me think that is what the bees want. They probably don't...

Lots of honey is obviously good for you

The Dark Horse Podcast is quite nice to listen to on occasion. Both evolutionary biologists. They were recently talking about how we don't know the impact of any of modern life's intrusions. Man has spent many thousands of years getting used to looking at the light from fire, but today how many...

    Plans for planting

The list of what they can and can't eat at the bottom of the link pargyle gave is, um, diverse to say the least!

    Plans for planting

I am planning to unplant some kale, broccoli and cabbage I left from last year just to see what it did. One beetroot I left has self seeded to some extent so I'm hoping these plants will do the same. I also have a cabbage in it's third year which is one weird plant! But anyhow, currently there a...

    Forum Poll

The nuance aspect is very true, I don't think the people here who do it realise how they come across. I have indeed not been a registered user for very long. Maybe I started reading this forum before that point?

    Forum Poll

I didn't refer to me or my post in explaining my opinion here. That post did indeed result in some helpful replies. I was commenting on what I have seen happen to others.

    Far NW UK newbie questions

For reference, an Abello 12 frame poly hive does not fit in a 240l wheelie bin :)

    Forum Poll

There is no question of how useful and informative this forum is. In some responses, often to newcomers, people behave as if in a school playground. The surly gang picking on the newby, mickey taking, bullying, having fun between them at the expense of the newby especially if an "in" joke. It...

    New renegade beekeeper Stirlingshire

As well as the knowledge base of the 1000, wouldn't the height you dropped them from have the largest effect on how many survived? :)

    Slugs in Nucs

I'd read the copper tape isn't wide enough to cause slugs a problem, so in my greenhouse put the copper mesh you get on a roll to bung into holes to keep vermin out so you get a maybe 100mm wide strip. But the slugs just cruise straight over the top of it :( Scissors work well though :)

No, what I posted is probably not correct. I need to watch the vid again :)

So the hello intro section can also be we'll give you a load of stick section? To a beginner in beekeeping? I don't think anyone is suggesting criticism is not a wonderful thing. The tone of some of you while criticising is not. That's three or four beginners in this thread criticising some of...

    New renegade beekeeper Stirlingshire

What section is this again? As a beginner myself I would not describe this as a friendly and welcoming forum overall. I think that some longstanding posters here could take a step back and consider how their posts may seem to others. If a few did that rather than continuing posting in the same...

    Far NW UK newbie questions

It is possible I am thinking of what the wind can do too much, but it would be silly to have a hive broken because of it when I could have done something to minimise the effects. Most wind is winter and overnight, so hopefully it won't be a non-starter for the bees, who will have a fair degree...

    Far NW UK newbie questions

Thank you all for the inputs. I read about a man whose name I should have remembered who worked with bees at the college in Stornoway and then Aberdeen around 1900 IIRC who designed a hive to be left on the moor year round, and was so heavy you couldn't easily move it if you wanted too! So...
