    Grow Lights

If they give off UV, are they bad for your skin and eyes?

Could be that it's just not big enough. I've read that for a hot heap you need to make it all at once and make it big.

    Open feeding honey to bees!?

Thanks. Been meaning to ask someone that for ages but I only ever think of it when no-one is around! :)

    Open feeding honey to bees!?

In the autumn I see thousands of bees, wasps and other insects on the large patches of ivy we have. You can hear the noise of them from the other side of the house. I've often wondered, does this have the same disease risk as open feeding?

Who are the suppliers and what variety? I struggle to get spring onions to germinate.

Got myself in a mess. Trying to sort it.

I have a dictaphone (don't even go there!) that I can play back on double speed - might give it a go. I can never remember what I've done. I have a brick system. Brick flat - hive is ok - brood, eggs, stores. Brick on it's side - keep an eye on it. No brick - they're dead! Sometimes I feel I...

    Equipment Wanted Capping spinner wanted

In previous years I have put my cappings in a sieve over a bowl and wrapped it all in clingfilm. Messy and you can't fit much in. This year I made this using cleaned fat ball buckets (food grade) and a broken sieve, and it works a treat. I was not so good at cutting holes with a drill without...

    Conwy Honey Fair 2024

It started spitting at about 07:30 and a collective groan went through all the stallholders. But then it thought better of it and we had a clear day. Lots of people and quite a few bees visited (with many people commenting on the number of wasps around :laughing-smiley-004). Thanks, Pete, for...

    Clearing Bees from Supers

I put a clearer board at the bottom on top of a hive stand about 20m from my hives. Then 5 supers from different hives, then another clearer board on top. It was about 4pm by the finish and a good sunny day. Next morning there was a cluster of bees on the top which I shook off near the hives. I...

    Feeder full of dead bees

I switched to these a few years back. They sit above the crown board and the mesh end stands in a container full of syrup. I use an empty super as an eke. The container covers the 2nd hole on the crown board, the feeder covers the first. It meant I could come home from work and feed the bees...

    Clearing Bees from Supers

Does the frame need to be so deep if I'm taking them from the hive and making a stack with a clearer board top and bottom?

To treat or not to treat...

There are a lot of people who do not treat for varroa. I am one of them. It is a contentious issue. Read around the subject and make up your own mind.

    Which brush?

A handful of long grass held together by an elastic band so less moulting and so that I can find it after I've put it down in the rest of the long grass :laughing-smiley-004
