OA sublimation into the hive or under the open mesh floor ?

I too have wooden WBC’s therefore had someone cut out tiny trap doors on floor and retained the cut out plug to reinsert with turn buttons to keep this in place when not needed. This works well for me with stainless steel mesh on the floor inside, no disturbance in December when I am using the...

    Newbee from Northern Ireland

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum and ask what you like as you will always be answered. There is a great deal to learn and always remember we were newbies once and in my case anyway made absolutely loads of mistakes. Move on from the mistakes and rectify when you can, while resolving not to repeat...

Making thin foundation for cut comb

Personally I cut all combs out leaving only a couple of centimetres of their previous comb made by themselves. I dislike eating the rib caused by manufactured wax, and I do not wish my Customers to eat that either. I used to get told that this was quality cut comb not quantity, however I...

    Abelo steam wax melter

Why do you not use a Solar Wax Extractor? Mine is a Recycled wooden box shape made to fit the size of an old double glazed window Pane this is metal lined with space for a Wax collecting receptacle at the bottom. A large Funnel shaped guide directs the melted wax to this. The receptacle I use...

What's flowering as forage in your area

Must check on Japanese Knotweed as it grows by a nearby stream. My Bees stopped going to Heather further away and choose the Knotweed instead. Honey was very good, similar in colour to Bell Heather. Anyone else with experience of the Knotweed? Incidentally, I still get a little Hog Weed too...

God I love growing our own

Like me you are lucky to be able to accommodate a garden space, I have raised beds which are a godsend and do not buy veg as I grow all my own, and grow them on seaweed. Great! Each bed has Annuals grown along side for pollinators very beneficial with Beans etc. Bees and Butterflies love the...

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I introduce new Queens via the main entrance of the Hive and have not had a failure yet. The method was told to me by my mentor who had kept bees since 1921. Dunk the new cadged Queen in tepid water and then quickly show her the entrance removing the cage block, because she is wet and...

How can I begin my bee keeping journey?

Joining an Association is the first step and checking you are not allergic to Bee Stings would be advisable too, however you may have this knowledge. Anaphylactic shock is life threatening and frightening for everyone concerned.

What's flowering as forage in your area

Lime trees have just started giving up their nectar, sounds like a Tardis underneath them. All sorts of wild flowers around especially Green Alkanet, Broom, Snowberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Cornflower and Poppy to name a few. My girls are spoilt for choice.

    Hello from north Scotland

I have a Bee House which I bought at a Bee Roup many years ago, it is excellent for manipulation in inclement weather and keeps all equipment together.

    Hello from north Scotland

Why not build a Bee House for the hives as this would keep them protected from adverse weather conditions.
