Chicken Registration by 1st Oct 2024

1st you have to register, then you have to pay a 'small' fee to make the register pay for itself, then they need a new computer system (that has to pay for itself!). Seen the massive companies house fees increases? https://www.gov.uk/government/news/companies-house-fees-increasing-from-1-may-2024

    Beekeeping tax strategy

I certainly think it is far easier to bolt one business onto another (i.e. you are a writer or photographer and add beekeeping to the business). I have a friend who is a consultant, writer and photographer and all the consultancy money goes into the expenses of the other 2. Never paid tax, 15+...

    Beekeeping tax strategy

Great thing about honey is its zero-rated (basically VAT free) when you sell it. So 20% off all equipment and no VAT to pay on your sales - win win. Can't believe so many people think it is hard work - 4 times a year you do a digital return. If you have a business account with NatWest or Royal...

    Wasp trap bait

Mine are good welsh Methodist bees - they don't touch anything with alcohol in.

    Wasp trap bait

cheap aldi larger and cheap co-op mixed fruit jam. Large jar as possible with upturned 2lt pop bottle upside down with 4 holes on the curved bit next to the jar (so rain water doesn't get in). Result: a stinking mass of wasps by autumn.

I'm being forced to accept a new beekeeping agreement

Very easy - you keep bees elsewhere as well (yes you do, they don't need to know where). Any honey taken off the allotment bees are used to feed the other bees. That honey you have for sale? Taken from other bees, not allotment bees Proof? They need to provide it, not you.

Not seen two wasps behaving like this before.

One has clearly kissed the other without permission and is now in deep trouble

I thought I was being smart by buying a lifetimes worth from Simons when they had their closing sale. DARN! Could you link to the bellows that will fit? thx

    Thorne budget smoker recall

Asbestos still kills around 5000 workers each year, this is more than the number of people killed on the road. https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/dangerous.htm

    mini breakfast jars

Ketchup pumps should really be emptied out and not used as storage as they are a pain if the honey crystalizes in the pump. Hot water does most of the work though.

Yes, I was feeling so guilty! Don't know what she can do as the postman etc. must be at risk as well

    Systemic Sting Reactions

Update Of course you sometimes can't be sure what stung you........... She got stung again, so I went to see her; she had a hornet living in her front door frame and when the door slammed it came out to attack! I have seen way more than the usual numbers of hornet nests this year.

    Systemic Sting Reactions

Well that is very interesting as my friend takes Ibuprofen (an NSAID apparently) And I found a mention of a letter published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, about this - "The authors describe three lifelong beekeepers with tolerance to stings who suffered systemic allergic...

    Systemic Sting Reactions

Yes, the message does seem to be you can't gauge the future by the past when it comes to stings. Thx all.

    Systemic Sting Reactions

She lives near my bees and has been stung maybe 5 times in 3 years. But this year twice now in the face within 4 weeks, 1st time just localized swelling 2nd time very nasty swelling and as above. Now - 3 days later she looks like she had been in a boxing ring!

    Systemic Sting Reactions

A friend has just had a systemic reaction to a sting on her face (very bad face swelling, hot all over, itching down to palms etc). She would like to know if others have had the same and what happened on further stings afterwards. Thanks
