Piles of dead bees under hives

Mine were a bit confused at first and it was a bit chaotic but they sorted themselves out. I put the Varroa board in and removed the entrance restrictor to give them maximum access. Once they have sorted themselves out you can set the entrance to whatever you prefer. Good to hear that they...

    Aaargh! I’m egg blind!

Take a picture on your phone of where they are likely to be and then zoom in on the picture. I won an argument doing this with a very experienced master beek who insisted that a colony was Q- because there were no eggs. There were and seen easily on the pictures.

Piles of dead bees under hives

I would recommend that to watch this presentation. by Prof Giles Budge of Newcastle Uni. One of my hives had CBPV about 5 years ago. The standard NBU advise then was to shake out the bees 10m away for the healthy one to return to the hive. This doesn't work as the bees have the virus and show...

Asian hornet traps and baits - please review what you've used

The traps are based on the design of those on YouTube with some amendments to the size of the entrance hole to make them suitable for Spring Queen trapping. Testing is difficult in the timeframe, Queens are appearing around now. These are similar to the many 3D version currently circulating but...

Asian hornet traps and baits - please review what you've used

As per YouTube these look to work well and are selective. But they are made to fit a Nutella jar and the thread & size is not that common here. There are ones to suit UK sizes as free to use 3D printer design files available if you have a printer. If you do not have a 3D printer or access to...

Asian Hornets: policy re destroying secondary nests

Yep it is a problem but there are only so many Cherry pickers and tree climbers available. It's a difficult circle to square, do you leave it untreated and risk queen being released, or treat it and come back to it in a few days? It is complex, sometimes you have to choose the least worst option.

Asian Hornets: policy re destroying secondary nests

You are correct to a degree. In periods of high workload/demand the secondary nests were treated to kill them but were not immediately taken down. The removal of a high level nest, in particular, is time consuming and costly so then routine removal is under review.

    Asian Hornet detection

From Wikipedia, so accurate(?)..."Dover is one of the world's busiest maritime passenger ports, with 11.7 million passengers, 2.6 million lorries, 2.2 million cars and motorcycles and 80,000 coaches passing through it in 2017,[1] and with an annual turnover of £58.5 million a year.[2] This...

    Asian Hornet detection

The subject of detection sniffer dogs comes up occasionally in all sorts of areas. I work a cadaver dog, I have also trained to detect Asian Hornet nests, and she has detected them in various environments. The nests low down are easy, the nests high in trees can be and are detected but with a...

    Asian Hornets

The NBU/Defra update today (15/9) is 43 in 36 locations. That is found nests so does not include know nests that are known to be there but have not been found, eg those in Capel le Ferne.

    Asian Hornets

You are spot on except that we need more than just beekeepers for the spring trapping, there simply are not enough beekeepers to provide the coverage. We are currently having a large push on the media outlets and posters and flyers across Kent and to large corporations, eg highways agency to...

    Asian Hornets

Gard’Apis – All about preventing predation by the Asiatic Hornet / Frelon Asiatique The testing on these traps looks promising. Understanding the baiting is key, a part of the process is to leave some AHs in the trap as lure, being their distress pheromone.

    Asian Hornets

The NBU are currently clearing between 1 and 2 nests a day (I think that is in Kent). They are under pressure.

    Asian Hornets

Richard Noel (Youtube), who operates in France lost an entire apiary last year, and from his channel/talks a significant number of hobbiest beekeepers have simply given up due to the pressuer from the AHs.

    Asian Hornets

They know the nests are over the cliff as the tracking stops at the top but from that point to the sea the terrain is very difficult. There are no footpaths between the clifftop to the railways line. The NBU have tried but couldnt get through. It is pretty much the same from Folkestone to Dover...

    Asian Hornets

I would recommend that you all view Andrew Durhams presentation to BBKA, its on YouTube, it provides all the answers to the questions raised here. I have been to the apiary several times and witnessed what is happening. The hornets hawk the hives and catch the flying foragers, after a short...
