    Queen above QE

decided to but the bullet and go double brood as 8 frames of brood in first box. Put new one with drawn frames under old one 10 frames each and super on top. Saw queen all well. But just as I was going to put strap on noticed that forgot QE. Only two mins had passed so guessed the queen would...

    Winter loss

Hi Through my polycarb crown board I am now seeing (have looked twice overwinter) literally 3 bees. There is no activity on the type of days where in the past there was plenty. There is plenty of food and the bees seem to be able to move about. I feel that I have lost my colony. I will restart...

    Harvesting uncapped honey

Hi I have a super of uncapped and drippy honey. I want to make mead but don’t have an extractor. I would rather not destroy the comb- most of it is foundationless and I want to use it next year. Do you think I could wash the honey out by soaking the combs in warm water?

    Honey Tasting

Is there any classes/courses on honey tasting. My daughter and I are enjoying tasting all the complexity of our own honey but feel somewhat lacking in describing it. I don’t want to end up like a honey eating Julie Goodyear but would like to know what I am looking for and able to describe it

    Closing hives

Due to circumstances beyond my control (party in garden next door with one child severely allergic to bee stings) I am going to shut my bees in. As luck would have it it will be glorious weather all day (23 degrees). The hives have mesh floors. I am going to use mouse excluders with some mesh...

    Mating or failed swarm

Hi All I had a new hatched queen in a hive that I was expecting to do a mating flight on Tuesday/Wed. But instead there was (what I thought was) a swarm. They were easy to put in a nuc although they were not as docile as other swarms I have retrieved. I noticed they hadn’t depleted the honey...

    Supercedure?

Hi I would value some advice. Last week I found a capped queen cell on the face of a frame. It was the only one and I am sure they hadn’t swarmed. I assumed superceedure even though it is a first year queen and laying well, but not prolific. The QC was very small and as there were eggs I...

    Is this a queen

Bottom right. I think many newbies like me would like this type of advice. I know there is a queen in the hive, eggs and larvae but this year is a new unmarked queen. I have not seen her so far and am not good at finding them.

    Midsommer Murders

Oh no I am being forced to watch 2 hrs of Midsommer Murders on Sunday. Wife and daughter insist I must be interested because it’s about a bee thief!!’ Presumably steals more than one !!!

    Bees not flying

I have a poly nuc I have been overwintering. It had a young queen and seemed to be reasonably strong. My other hives have been busy over last few days but absolutely nothing coming out of nuc. I opened the roof and saw bees inside the fondant bag working away. It looked like there was still a...

    When to stop syrup

I just hefted my hives and they are rally light. I fed some syrup beginning of September and they took it. But was seeing lots of activity/ pollen going in and there was lots of ivy so stopped. Is it too late to give more syrup (in Edinburgh). Or should I start feeding them fondant? Thanks

    Combining two brood to one

I am consolidating a hive to make a double brood single for over winter. But I will be left with a few brood frames with mostly uncapped honey. What can I do with it? I don’t have an extractor as I only do comb

    Dead queen

Hi everyone. I'm in first full year having bought a nuc last June. It has been full on but fascinating. Yesterday decided to inspect a poly nuc which holds a swarm that I collected in June. It was a virgin queen as I had done a pagden and still have original marked. The new queen never did well...
