New to beekeeping looking for cedar hives

Hi jenkinsbrynmair. This is an interesting and challenging discussion. With your comment "A non argument, merely clutching at straws now clutching at straws" it appears you are refusing to engage with the complexity of environmental cost. If this is the case then, unfortunately, your comments as...

    a reBees lost

By all means buy your Nuc from Paynes but I hope you won't think that's a magic bullet against Varroa. We got a Nuc from Paynes in May last year, not sure how clean they were to start with but by Autumn there were plenty of Varroa to deal with. Oh and strangely the supposedly 2020 queen had a...

    High mite count

Interesting point of view Hachi. Surely you would agree that if people make categoric statements then they should be able to substantiate them with evidence. Otherwise there is the danger of repeating "old wive's tales" until they became accepted fact. I, for one, would like to know whether...

    Local adaption

Thanks elainemary. I don't think the source is "useless information" jenkinsbrynmair. In case it has escaped your attention we live in the age of "alternative facts" ;-)

    Local adaption

I think it would be helpful when making statements like this to identify the source. Presumable this comes from a scientific study, rather than a chat in the pub ;). So perhaps elainemary (and anyone else making statements like this) you can provide us with the source in a format something like...

    Local adaption

IMO John Chambers talk posted by ChrisS is a really informative must watch. Particularly for beekeepers importing queens!!!

    Colony density

The Beebase FAQ's say: Currently beekeepers are not permitted to remove apiaries from BeeBase as this can ultimately remove inspection data held for them. If there are no longer bees kept at the site you can mark an apiary 'non-current' by editing it (see below). However, if bees were never...

    Colony density

I just looked at Beebase and you can "Edit Apiary Details" to say "Current" = No. Is this not the same as deleting it? i.e. are you saying that "Current" = No apiaries still show up as part of the Beebase apiary count? From the Beebase blurb I am not sure whether they update counts immediately...

    Colony density

Has anyone taken the inability to delete old sites up with beebase? The lack of this feature would seem to make it near useless!!!

    Varroa

Before making a decision on this, on the grounds of "know your enemy", I strongly recommend watching this amusing and very informative lecture by Dr Samuel Ramsey to the INI Beekeepers: Dr Samuel Ramsey – Varroa feed on Fat Body

    Oxalic Vaporiser

Thanks Erichalfbee. I will try vaping under the omf, but to do this I will need to take out the inspection board below the omf and vape from the back. This means there will be an open space below the vapouriser and the oxalic acid fumes will not be confined in the hive. Is this ok or do I need...

    Oxalic sublimation

Can someone explain please. When buying Oxalic acid it seems to be called either "Oxalic Acid" or "Oxalic Acid Dihydrate". Are they the same thing? If not are they both suitable for a vapouriser?
