    Bees have disappeared!

the colony was strong going into the winter. Yes they were treated for varroa in autumn and an oxalic acid treatment (vapor) at the start of the new year. Hive entrance was reduced and mouse guard fitted for winter setup. Today there was no brood what so ever. During oxalic acid treatment I got...

    Bees have disappeared!

As the circumstances were suspicious, would it be a good idea not to use the frames of stores and sterilize the hive and frames? All the other hives in the apiary appeared fine.

    Bees have disappeared!

Hello fellow beekeepers, I am mystified. What I thought was a strong hive in February has now vanished. I uncovered this discovery today in my apiary. I hadn’t checked the colony since feb and today all that was left was a few dead bees on the floorboard. There was no signs of a laying worker...

1:1 Syrup - draw out super frames

Hello fellow beekeepers, I hope you and your bees are well and looking forward to the season ahead. I have a strong overwintered hive of bees. Approx 9 frames of bees and 3-4 frames of brood. I want to add a super however the frames in the super are not drawn out. So I was thinking of feeding...

    Fondant or 2:1 syrup

Is it true bees can not store fondant. They can only consume it? Where as with syrup they can store it? Would it not be better to give them syrup instead at this time? Thank you all for your feedback 👍

    Fondant or 2:1 syrup

Thank you for your reply. They have a good bit of stores but I just want to make sure they have enough. Temperature is about the same in Dublin for the next week anyway.

    Fondant or 2:1 syrup

Hello fellow beekeepers, Would I be better off feeding my bees fondant or 2:1 syrup at this time of year? What are the pros and cons of either? Thank you in advance, Peter

    Cleaning and Sterilizing Brood Frames

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year fellow beekeepers. Over the course of the following few days I am hoping to clean and sterilize about 20 brood frames. I have removed the wax from these frames so all I am left with is the timber frames. What I propose in using is Sodium hypochlorite which is...

    Rendering Bees Wax

Hello fellow beekeepers over the few years I have acquired a good bit of bees wax and now that things are beginning to quieten down, I am hoping to make a few candles. However trying to render the wax is a challenging especially if you want to get it really clear. So any advice on rendering wax...

    Cloudy Honey

Thank you all very much for your tips and advice. As you suggested I put one cloudy jar into a pan of hot water and that cleared it. I am going to start bottling today before remainder of honey crystalizes in the settling tank. I was thinking of putting the jars once poured into the kitchen...

    Cloudy Honey

Hello fellow beekeepers, Just a quick question. My honey has now been settling for about 6 days in my settling tank. However when I started bottling it, I realised it's still cloudy. Is this normal. Should I leave it a little long to ensure its clear when I do jar it? I filtered the honey when...
