What did you do in the Apiary today?

Woke up several times last night as it sounded like someone was hurling buckets of water at the bedroom windows. Very stormy today on the coast - gusts of upto 60mph and torrential rain then sun then rain again.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Best advice I had from my mentor was if you are in OMG mode, as the bees have done something random or unexpected, gently close up the hive, go have a cuppa and a think and then if you are still not sure what to do, you can always check a good book or phone a friend for advice.

What's flowering as forage in your area

A large rosemary bush by the front door is keeping the bees busy between downpours.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

True but as @pargyle is not a million miles from me and we share a similar climate, it’s a good indicator of what may be going on locally.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

It's rubbish isn't it? There is OSR just up the road but it's not warm enough for bees to be out or nectar to flow. I'm hoping this means we'll have a cracking summer.... 🤞 🤞 🤞

But they have to start from somewhere....

    Frame spacers

I use a J tool and first use it sideways like a can opener to break the propolis seal between lugs & frame runners and then gently lever out the frames with J end.

    Frame spacers

I remember dipping into a beekeeping book before I went on my first courses - it may as well have been written in Chinese with all the terminology & acronyms!

    Using Sheep’s Wool As Insulation

Those who trendily feed their dogs raw food always have loads of wool insulation - i've been stockpiling....

    First Inspection

Not sure I would describe it as amazing! I’ve lost count how many times our garden has been underwater and everything is so sodden, I haven’t been able to do any spring prep in the garden until last week ☹️

    First Inspection

It was also reported today that the south of England had the wettest February since records began. Although I’m not sure we needed a report to tell us that!

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I wish!! I’ve just bought some scaffold jacks so planning on a more robust stand as this usually has two hives on it 😱

This is my weather forecaster. More accurate than the met office tbh!

    What chance of survival?

Does it?? Heavens, we just clipped the bay tree and I was thinking all those cut leaves would be lovely in the smoker…..

What's flowering as forage in your area

Yay! Had to head into Chichester today and spotted two OSR fields turning yellow less than a mile from my apiary. Lots of celandines in the garden, the willow is in full catkin flow and the rosemary has burst into life & the bees are all over it. Amazing what a difference a couple of sunny days...

Labour to end exemptions from ban on neocotinids

Bad grammar on my part - replace sugar with honey would have read better!

What's flowering as forage in your area

It’s been a bit sporadic last few years but the best field near my out apiary was sold for housing last year 🤬

    Bucket Warming Blanket

We’ve got a couple of cast iron radiators in the hallway. Turn it down to 1, put the bucket on top wrapped in a towel (including the base), warms through gently in a couple of days!

If only people would substitute sugar for honey……
