What did you do in the Apiary today?

Received notice from my bees that they are emigrating to a warmer drier climate when they make swarm preparations later in the season. 3c and sleeting. I’m fed up with the weather!

    First Inspection

I’m equally way behind schedule. Not sure if I’ll ever catch up tbh. Running therapeutic gardening sessions through this winter for vulnerable adults and children has been incredibly challenging. A bit of dry weather would be very welcome. We’ve had bright sunshine with a cold wind, torrential...

    First Inspection

Send some this way please?! Damp and chilly most of the day. Hardly seen any dandelions out as yet

    What chance of survival?

My uncle was a haematologist specialising in leukaemia. Some of his work involved the Rosy Periwinkle for Vinblastine and Vincristine.

What's flowering as forage in your area

My damson is still in tight bud. Hopefully it might be ok.

    First inspection?

I’m just into my fifth year of bee keeping and just about feel I can trust my hefting skills. To start with I used luggage scales to weigh each side of the hive followed by hefting it straight after. It helped me to learn the process.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Checked one apiary today. The bees were enjoying the sunshine. Lots of pollen being collected. Three were lighter than desired, so added fondant. A few weeks ago, they were still quite heavy. Took my first sting of the year on a finger as I added the fondant.

Where do you buy your seeds?

I saw those. Not bad value apart from the garlic chives. They can become invasive.

The bottom photo looks more like a Daphne rather than Viburnum.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

If there are not too many, I carefully lift each one off and put it on the landing board or I prop the packaging on the board for them to climb back inside.

God I love growing our own

How long does it last for? Do you find that strands break off? I don’t want to be dropping bits of plastic into the ground.

God I love growing our own

I’ve got raised beds and had wondered about putting brackets in the corners to hold the pipe in place to stop it wobbling.

Any recommendations for where to get fleece and netting at a good price. I need to replace all of mine this year. I need to replace the supports too. Thought I might try blue water pipe. Anyone tried that?

    Interesting podcast I came across

The whole series has been interesting and thought provoking at times.

Sarcococca flowering nicely in my garden too, but it’s the Winter Flowering Honeysuckle that is getting the most attention. Quite a few queen bumblebees are visiting it, no honey bees yet. Weather although warmer has been quite damp.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Quite a few possibilities: Snowdrop, Crocus, Hellibore, Hazel, Primrose, Very early Daffs. Have a look around, what’s flowering near your apiary?

    Does peroxide kill nosema ?

Icing sugar works well too as demonstrated by a visiting scientist to my children’s then primary school. The kids were impressed by the explosion.

Where do you buy your seeds?

I’ve grown a cucumber called Passandra for the last few years. Its an F1 variety. It produces fruit that don’t have any spikes and the skin isn’t tough either. Two plants produced more than we (5 of us) could eat. The plants needed plenty of support and regular watering as they reached the roof...
