What did you do in the Apiary today?

Thank you! Unfortunately copper was too expensive, so I cheated and painted them in copper effect metallic paint. :giggle: Andrew.

What's flowering as forage in your area

My bees were all over Hairy Willowherb today, whether this is any good for nectar or not is debatable but there was plenty of yellow pollen coming from it. Andrew.

For my first swarm capture, it was perfect! I’m sure it won’t be so convenient next time! andrew

What did you do in the Apiary today?

Turned up to inspect my hives today, half way through one, another decided to swarm into next door’s tree. Will go back to check on them in a few days and move them into a full sized hive. Andrew.

    Moving Hives

Last summer I moved my bees about 1 mile, if not less. I shut them up the evening before and then moved them the following morning. Less than 10 bees returned to the old site, but this was September so maybe there were fewer flying bees then. Andrew

    Supering Dilemma - Lothian

Thanks for the tips, I forgot to mention that I also added two brood frames either side of the brood nest. Given how much wax they’ve been making recently, hopefully they’ll draw these out quickly, especially as the super I put on was wet. Weather here was 16 degrees yesterday, with similar...

    Supering Dilemma - Lothian

14 degrees and warm in the sun yesterday. I went to see my three hives expecting to have a quick peep through the clear crown board and be done…. All were really busy, but one hive was jam packed with bees wall to wall with brood and a about three frames of stores, including fresh nectar. I had...

Hives dead & dying: what reasons, what to do?

One of my hives also had CBPV last year, it started around July time and by September most of the bees were dead. They went into winter with only two frames of brood in a 14x12 brood box, so I didn't expect them to survive the winter. I fed them throughout winter and hoped for the best, but...

Does anyone know the wall thickness of the Abelo brood box? I don’t have one to hand to measure unfortunately. Many thanks, Andrew

    Vertical take off?

It does feel like that sometimes, and then all of a sudden all calm is restored! Andrew.

    Vertical take off?

I had a similar set up last year in my garden with just two hives, I’ve have since moved them to an out apiary. I found that the take off wasn’t a problem. They’d go off up vertically and do exactly what I wanted them to do, spiralling high in the air before deciding which direction to go...

    Brown liquid on inspection board

Could it be rusty water from something metal inside which has corroded? Andrew

    Best National Hive

I tend to use Peak Hives and have found their quality to be excellent. Nick and Adriana are always very helpful and it’s great to be able to support our smaller British producers. Andrew.
